and they will drink up all the water on earth. If one of them passes by a river, he will drink everything in it until he leaves it completely dry, and when someone comes after him and passes by that same river he will say, “There was once water here.” Finally, no human being will remain except those sheltered inside a fortress or a city. One of them will then say, “Here are the people of the earth—we have finished with them; only the people of heaven are left.”
He continued: One of them will shake his spear, hurl it toward the sky, and it will come back to him reddened with something like blood, as a trial and a temptation. While they are in that state Allah will send worms into their necks—naghaf, like the larvae that infest the necks of locusts—and by morning they will all be dead, with not a sound to be heard from them.
The Muslims will then say, “Is there anyone who will risk his life for us and go to see what this enemy has done?” A man will volunteer, having resolved to sacrifice himself for Allah’s sake, certain that he will be killed. He will go down and find them lying dead in heaps, one upon another. He will call out, “O assembly of Muslims, rejoice! Allah the Exalted has spared you from your enemy.” The people will come out of their cities and fortresses and release their livestock, and the animals will find no pasture except their corpses, yet they will grow fatter on that flesh than they have ever fattened on any vegetation. Ibn Mājah likewise recorded this report through the chain of Yūnus ibn Bukayr from Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq, and its chain is sound.
In the ḥadīth of al-Nawwās ibn Samʿān—after mentioning that Jesus kills the Antichrist at the eastern gate of Lod—he said:
“While they are in that state, Allah will reveal to Jesus son of Mary (peace be upon him): ‘I have brought forth servants of Mine against whom no one will have the power to fight; therefore take My servants to safety upon the Mount.’ Allah will then release Gog and Magog, and they will surge forth just as Allah, Exalted is He, has said: ‘…and they rush down from every rise’ (21:96). Jesus and his companions will beseech Allah—exalted is He—and He will send naghaf upon their necks, so that by morning they will lie dead, as though they had perished in a single instant. Jesus and his companions will descend and will not find a single house on earth that is not filled with their putrefying matter and stench. Again they will implore Allah—exalted is He—and He will send birds with necks like those of Bactrian camels; the birds will carry them away and drop them wherever Allah wills. (2)
Kaʿb al-Aḥbār said that this will take place in a location called al-Mahbil, where the sun rises… The report continues to the end and has already been cited.
There is also the ḥadīth of Muʾaththir ibn ʿAfāzah from Ibn Masʿūd concerning the gathering of the prophets on the Night of the Ascension, when they discussed the matter of the Hour and referred it to Jesus… The report was cited above, and at its conclusion he said:
“The people will return to their homelands, and at that time Gog and Magog will emerge, rushing down from every rise. They will trample their lands; they will not pass by anything without destroying it, nor will they pass by any water without drinking it dry.” He then said, “The people will come back to me complaining about them, so I will supplicate Allah—exalted is He—against them, and He will destroy them and cause them to perish until the earth cracks from the stench of their corpses. Allah will then send rain that will wash their bodies away until He hurls them into the sea. My Lord has informed me that when this occurs…”
