Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

Others also transmitted it: Bishr ibn Muʿādh, from Yazīd, from Saʿīd ibn Abī ʿArūbah, from Qatādah, with similar wording; this isnād is good and strong. (1)

Al-Bukhārī recorded—from Abū al-Yamān, from Shuʿayb, from al-Zuhrī, from Abū Salamah, from Abū Hurayrah—who said: “I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, ‘Of all people I am the closest to the son of Mary. The prophets are paternal half-brothers; there is no prophet between him and me.’ ”

He also narrated—from Muḥammad ibn Sinān, from Fulayḥ ibn Sulaymān, from Hilāl ibn ʿAlī, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī ʿAmrah, from Abū Hurayrah—that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “I am the nearest of mankind to Jesus son of Mary in this world and the Hereafter. The prophets are half-brothers through their fathers; their mothers differ, yet their religion is one.”

He further said: Ibrāhīm ibn Ṭahmān related—from Mūsā ibn ʿUqbah, from Ṣafwān ibn Sulaym, from ʿAṭāʾ ibn Yasār, from Abū Hurayrah—who said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said. (2)

These numerous chains therefore amount to a near-mutawātir report from Abū Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him.

[Report from Ibn Masʿūd]

Imam Aḥmad said: Hushaym narrated to us, from al-ʿAwām ibn Ḥawshab, from Jabalah ibn Suḥaym, from Muʾaththir ibn ʿAfāzah, from Ibn Masʿūd, from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, who said:

“I met Abraham, Moses, and Jesus—peace be upon them—on the night I was taken on the Night Journey. They began to discuss the matter of the Hour and referred the question to Abraham, who said, ‘I have no knowledge of it.’ They then referred it to Moses, who said, ‘I have no knowledge of it.’ Finally they referred it to Jesus, who said, ‘As for its exact time ⦗3⦘, no one knows it except Allah. Yet my Lord—Exalted is He—has informed me that the Dajjāl (the false messiah) will come forth, and I shall have with me two staves; when he sees me he will melt away just as molten lead melts.’ He went on: ‘Allah will destroy him [when he sees me], so much so that the very trees and stones will say, “O Muslim, there is a disbeliever beneath me; come and kill him.” ’ He continued: ‘Allah will annihilate them; then people will return to their lands and homes. At that point Gog and Magog will emerge, swarming down from every hillside. They will trample the earth, leaving nothing without devouring it, and they will pass by no water without drinking it dry.’ He said: ‘The people will then come back to me and complain about them, so I will supplicate to Allah against them, and He will destroy them and cause them to die, until the earth swells ⦗4⦘ with the stench of their corpses. Then Allah will send down—”

(1) Narrated by Ahmad in al-Musnad (2:406) and by Abu Dawud (no. 4324). Comment: Its chain of transmission is interrupted—Qatada did not actually hear it from ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Adam, the freedman of Umm Barthan—yet the hadith is reliable through its other reports and corroborating narrations. This report mentions that ‘Isa (Jesus) will remain for forty years; previously, Muslim (no. 2940) recorded a report from ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Amr stating that he will stay among the people for seven years, which the author will cite shortly thereafter. (2) Narrated by al-Bukhari (nos. 3442 and 3443). (3) i.e., its occurrence. (4) i.e., it becomes putrid.
