Imam Aḥmad said:
Yazīd narrated to us, Sufyān—meaning Ibn Ḥusayn—narrated to us, from al-Zuhrī, from Ḥanẓalah, from Abū Hurayrah, who said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Jesus son of Mary will descend, kill the swine, erase the cross, and the prayer will be established for him. He will give out wealth until it is no longer accepted, abolish the kharāj (land-tax), and he will alight at al-Rawḥāʾ, whence he will perform the ḥajj, or the ʿumrah, or both together.”
Abū Hurayrah then recited, “There is none of the People of the Scripture but that he will surely believe in him before his death, and on the Day of Resurrection he will be a witness against them” (159) [al-Nisāʾ].
Ḥanẓalah maintained that Abū Hurayrah added, “They will believe in him before Jesus dies.” I do not know—was all of this the Prophet’s ﷺ own statement, or something Abū Hurayrah himself said? (1)
Aḥmad and Muslim likewise transmitted—through al-Zuhrī, from Ḥanẓalah, from Abū Hurayrah—that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Jesus son of Mary will most certainly recite the talbiyah from the mountain pass of al-Rawḥāʾ for the ḥajj and the ʿumrah, or he will combine the two rites.” (2)
Al-Bukhārī said: Ibn Bukayr narrated to us, al-Layth narrated to us, from Yūnus, from Ibn Shihāb, from Nāfiʿ, the client of Abū Qatādah al-Anṣārī, that Abū Hurayrah said the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“How will you fare when the son of Mary descends among you and your imām is one of you?”
Al-Bukhārī added: ʿUqayl and al-Awzāʿī corroborated this report. Imam Aḥmad also recorded it from ʿAbd al-Razzāq, from Maʿmar, and from ʿUthmān ibn ʿUmar, from Ibn Abī Dhʿib, both through al-Zuhrī; Muslim likewise included it from Yūnus, al-Awzāʿī, and Ibn Abī Dhʿib, all via al-Zuhrī (3).
Imam Aḥmad said: ʿAffān narrated to us, Hammām narrated to us, Qatādah informed us, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān—who is Ibn Ādam, the client of Umm Burthan, the keeper of the drinking water—from Abū Hurayrah, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Prophets are paternal brothers; their mothers differ, yet their religion is one. Of all people I am the closest to Jesus son of Mary, for no prophet came between him and me. He will surely descend. When you see him, recognise him: a man of medium stature, inclined to ruddiness and fairness, wearing two saffron-dyed garments (4); it will seem as though his head is dripping although it has not been touched by moisture. He will break the cross, kill the swine, abolish the jizyah, and call people to Islam. During his time Allah will destroy every community except Islam, and He will eliminate the false messiah. Then security will prevail upon the earth: lions will graze alongside camels, leopards with cattle, wolves with sheep, and children will play with serpents without being harmed. He will remain for forty years, then die, and the Muslims will perform his funeral prayer.”
Abū Dāwūd related it as well through Hudbah ibn Khālid, from Hammām ibn Yaḥyā, from Qatādah with this chain, and Ibn Jarīr transmitted it, though he did not mention it in his commentary.
