Abū Kabshah al-Salūlī relates that ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ told him he had heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say:
“Convey from me, even if it is only a single verse. Relate the accounts of the Children of Israel—there is no sin in that. But whoever deliberately fabricates a lie about me, let him take his seat in the Fire.”
Aḥmad also transmitted this ḥadīth through ʿAbd Allāh ibn Numayr and ʿAbd al-Razzāq, both reporting from al-Awzāʿī with the same chain.
Al-Bukhārī likewise recorded it from Abū ʿĀṣim al-Nabīl on the authority of al-Awzāʿī, and al-Tirmidhī narrated it from Bundār on the authority of Abū ʿĀṣim; he then cited it through Muḥammad ibn Yaḥyā al-Dhuhlī, from Muḥammad ibn Yūsuf al-Firyābī, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Thābit ibn Thawbān, from Ḥassān ibn ʿAṭiyyah, and declared it ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ.
Abū Bakr al-Bazzār said: “Muḥammad ibn al-Muthannā Abū Mūsā narrated to us; Hishām ibn Muʿāwiyah narrated to us; my father narrated to us, from Qatādah, from Abū Ḥassān, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr, who said:
‘The Prophet of Allah ﷺ would relate to us for most of the night the stories of the Children of Israel until daybreak, and we would rise only because of the magnitude of the prayer.’”
[Abū Dāwūd also transmitted it from Muḥammad ibn al-Muthannā. Al-Bazzār then said: “Muḥammad ibn al-Muthannā narrated to us; ʿAffān narrated to us; Abū Hilāl narrated to us, from Qatādah, from Abū Ḥassān, from ʿImrān ibn Ḥuṣayn, who said:
‘The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would narrate to us for most of the night about the Children of Israel, and he would not stand up except due to the gravity of the prayer.’”]
Al-Bazzār commented: “Hishām’s version is more reliable than Abū Hilāl’s; the correct chain is through ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr rather than ʿImrān ibn Ḥuṣayn. Allah knows best.”
Imām Aḥmad said: “Yaḥyā—that is, Ibn Saʿīd al-Qaṭṭān—narrated to us from Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr; Abū Salamah narrated to us from Abū Hurayrah, from the Prophet ﷺ:
‘Relate the accounts of the Children of Israel—there is no sin in that.’”
Its chain is sound, though neither al-Bukhārī nor Muslim included it in their collections.
