Saʿid ibn Sulayman Saʿduwayh narrated to us; Khalaf ibn Khalifah narrated to us, from Abu Malik al-Ashjaʿi, from Ribʿi, from Hudhayfah, who said:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“I know more about what the Dajjal carries with him than he himself does. He will have with him two streams: one will appear, to anyone who sees it, as a roaring fire, while the other will appear as gleaming white water. Whoever of you encounters him should close his eyes and drink from the one that looks like fire, for it is cool water. Beware of the other, for it is a tribulation. Be aware that the word ‘disbeliever’ is written between his eyes; every literate and illiterate person will be able to read it. One of his eyes is wiped out, covered by a thick membrane. At the end of his career he will emerge in the valley of al-Urdun, on the Pass of Fiq; everyone who believes in Allah and the Last Day will be in the Valley of al-Urdun. He will kill one-third of the Muslims, rout another third, and a third will remain, and night will fall between the two parties.
Some of the believers will then say to one another, ‘What are you waiting for? Go join your brothers in seeking the pleasure of your Lord. Whoever has extra food, let him share it with his brother. Pray until daybreak; hasten your prayer, then turn against your enemy.’
As they stand for prayer, Jesus son of Mary (peace be upon him) will descend, while their imam is leading them. When the imam concludes, he will say, ‘Make way for me to confront the enemy of Allah.’ The Dajjal will then melt away as salt dissolves, and Allah will empower the Muslims over his followers so that they slay them—so much so that the very stones and trees will call out, ‘Servant of Allah, Muslim, here is a Jew; come and kill him.’ The Muslims will prevail: they will break the cross, slaughter the swine, and abolish the jizyah.
While they are in that state, Allah will release Gog and Magog. The first of them will drink an entire lake, and when the last of them arrives it will be dry; they will say, ‘There was once water here.’ The Prophet of Allah (peace be upon him) and his companions will retreat until they enter a city of Palestine called Bāb Ludd. Gog and Magog will say, ‘We have dominated those on earth; now let us fight those in heaven.’ At that point the Prophet (upon him be peace) will supplicate to Allah, and Allah will send a sore upon their throats so that not a single one of them survives. Their stench will distress the Muslims, so Jesus will supplicate against them, and Allah will send a wind that hurls all of them into the sea.”
Our teacher, the hadith scholar Abu ʿAbd Allah al-Dhahabi, said, “This chain of transmission is sound.”
I say: its narrative sequence is unusual and it contains some objectionable elements—and Allah knows best. (1)
Ibn ʿAsakir (2) also reported, in the biography of a shaykh from Damascus, from al-ʿAlaʾ ibn ʿAbd al-Rahman, from his father, from Abu Hurayrah, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“This matter will remain with Quraysh: their righteous will rule by their righteousness and their wicked by their wickedness, until they hand it over to Jesus son of Mary.”
In another wording: “Their righteous through his righteousness, and their wicked through his wickedness.”
Ibn ʿAsakir said: “This latter wording is the sounder one.”
