Chapter
[Clarification of the Permission to Transmit and Report the Accounts of the Children of Israel]
Imam Aḥmad said:
“ʿAbd al-Ṣamad narrated to us; Hammām narrated to us; Zayd narrated to us, from ʿAṭāʾ ibn Yasār, from Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī, that the Prophet ﷺ said:
‘Relate from me and do not lie about me. Whoever deliberately lies about me, let him take his seat in the Fire. And relate what you will from the Children of Israel—there is no harm in doing so.’
He also said:
‘ʿAffān narrated to us; Hammām narrated to us; Zayd ibn Aslam informed us, from ʿAṭāʾ ibn Yasār, from Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī, that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“Do not write down anything from me other than the Qur’an. Whoever has written anything from me apart from the Qur’an, let him erase it.” He then said: “Report from the Children of Israel—there is no harm; and report from me, but do not lie about me.”’
He added: ‘And whoever lies about me…’ Hammām (I think he said) added: ‘…deliberately—let him take his seat in the Fire.’
Muslim and al-Nasā’ī likewise transmitted it through the chain of Hammām. Abū ʿAwānah al-Isfarā’īnī narrated it from Abū Dāwūd al-Sijistānī, from Hudbah, from Hammām, from Zayd ibn Aslam with the same wording.
He then said: Abū Dāwūd remarked, ‘Hammām erred in this; it is from the words of Abū Saʿīd.’ So he maintained.
Al-Tirmidhī also recorded part of it—raised to the Prophet—from Sufyān, from Wakīʿ, from Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah, from Zayd ibn Aslam. Allah knows best.
