most of them into apes and swine. Then the Dajjāl will come forth shortly thereafter.”
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then wept until we too wept because of his tears. We asked, “What makes you weep?” He replied, “Out of mercy for those wretched people, for among them are the moderate and among them are the zealous…” and the ḥadīth continues (1).
[Hadith of ʿUthmān ibn Abī al-ʿĀṣ (may Allah be pleased with him)]
Aḥmad said: Yazīd ibn Hārūn narrated to us; Ḥammād ibn Salamah narrated to us, from ʿAlī ibn Zayd, from Abū Naḍrah, who said:
We visited ʿUthmān ibn Abī al-ʿĀṣ on a Friday, intending to compare one of our Qurʾān codices with his. When the time for Friday prayer approached he ordered us to bathe, then perfume was brought and we perfumed ourselves. We went to the mosque and sat beside a man who began telling us about the Dajjāl. Presently ʿUthmān ibn Abī al-ʿĀṣ arrived, so we rose to greet him and sat with him. He said:
“I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say:
‘The Muslims will have three garrison-cities: one at the meeting point of the two seas, one at al-Ḥīrah, and one in Syria (al-Shām). People will be stricken with three great panics, and during that turmoil the Dajjāl will come out among the masses. He will rout those who are in the East, and the first garrison he reaches will be the city at the meeting point of the two seas. Its people will divide into three groups: a group that remains, saying, “We shall sniff the wind (2) and see what he is,” a group that joins the Bedouins, and a group that flees to the next garrison.
The Dajjāl will be accompanied by seventy thousand men wearing coats of mail (3), and the majority of his followers will be Jews and women. He will then reach the next garrison, whose people will likewise split into three groups: one saying, “We shall sniff the wind and see what he is,” another joining the Bedouins, and a third fleeing to the garrison that lies to the west of Syria.
The Muslims will withdraw to the mountain pass of ʿAqabah Afīq (4). They will send out their livestock (5), but their livestock will be struck down, and this will weigh heavily upon them. A severe famine and extreme hardship will befall them until one of them will burn the string of his bow and eat it.
While they are in that state, a herald will call out at the time of saḥar, “O people, relief has come to you!” three times. Some of them will say to others, “That voice must be the voice of someone who has eaten his fill.” Then Jesus son of Mary (may Allah have mercy on them) will descend at the dawn prayer. Their commander will say to him, “Spirit of Allah, step forward and lead us in prayer.” He will reply, “This community has leaders over one another.” Their commander will then advance and lead the prayer.
When the prayer is finished, Jesus (peace be upon him) will take up his spear and go toward the Dajjāl. When the Dajjāl sees him he will melt as lead melts, and Jesus will pierce him between the breast-bones and kill him. His followers will scatter in flight, and on that day nothing whatsoever will be able to conceal any one of them,
