one of his eyes was bulging, gleaming like a luminous star, and his hair looked like the boughs of a tree… He then narrated the remainder of the report. (1)
[Hadith of Hishām ibn ʿĀmir]
Imām Aḥmad said: Ḥusayn ibn Muḥammad narrated to us; Sulaymān ibn al-Mughīrah narrated to us; Ḥumayd—that is, Ibn Hilāl—narrated to us, from Hishām ibn ʿĀmir al-Anṣārī, who said:
I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, “From the creation of Adam until the Hour is established, no tribulation has been greater than the tribulation of the Dajjāl.”
Aḥmad also said: Ismāʿīl narrated to us; Ayyūb narrated to us, from Ḥumayd ibn Hilāl, on the authority of some of his elders, who related that Hishām ibn ʿĀmir said to his neighbors, “You go off to consult men who were neither more constant in the presence of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ nor more mindful of his ḥadith than I, yet I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, ‘From the creation of Adam until the coming of the Hour there is no affair graver than the Dajjāl.’”
Imām Aḥmad likewise recorded it through Aḥmad ibn ʿAbd al-Malik, from Ḥammād ibn Zayd, from Ayyūb, from Ḥumayd ibn Hilāl, from Abū al-Dahmāʾ, from Hishām ibn ʿĀmir, who said: “You pass (2) by me to a group of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ who were no more exact nor more retentive of his ḥadith than I, and yet I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, ‘From the creation of Adam until the Hour is established there is no matter greater than the Dajjāl.’”
Muslim also narrated it, through Ayyūb, from Ḥumayd ibn Hilāl, from a group that included Abū al-Dahmāʾ and Abū Qatādah, on the authority of Hishām ibn ʿĀmir, with similar wording (3).
Aḥmad said: ʿAbd al-Razzaq narrated to us; Maʿmar narrated to us, from Ayyūb, from Abū Qilābah, from Hishām ibn ʿĀmir, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “The back of the Dajjāl’s head is matted—tuft upon tuft (4). Whoever says to him, ‘You are my Lord,’ has succumbed to the trial; but whoever says, ‘You lie—my Lord is Allah, in Him I place my trust,’ he will not be harmed,” or he said, “no trial shall touch him.” (5)
[Hadith of Ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with him)]
Imām Aḥmad said: Aḥmad ibn ʿAbd al-Malik narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn Salamah narrated to us, from Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq, from Muḥammad ibn Ṭalḥah, from Sālim, from Ibn ʿUmar, who said:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “The Dajjāl will descend in this…”
