the west, affirming Muhammad ﷺ and following his religion; he will kill the Dajjāl, and then the Hour will be established. (1)
Al-Ṭabarānī said: Mūsā ibn Hārūn narrated to us; Marwān ibn Jaʿfar al-Samurrī narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn Ibrāhīm ibn Khabīb ibn Sulaymān narrated to us; Jaʿfar ibn Saʿd ibn Samurah narrated to us, from Khubayb (2), from his father, from his grandfather Samurah:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to say: “The Messiah Dajjāl is blind in his left eye, over which is a thick flap of flesh. He will cure the congenitally blind and the leper, and he will raise the dead. He will proclaim, ‘I am your Lord.’ Whoever clings to Allah and says, ‘My Lord is Allah,’ and then perseveres in that until he dies, will suffer neither punishment nor trial. But whoever says, ‘You are my lord,’ has fallen into his temptation. He will remain on earth for as long as Allah wills. Then Jesus son of Mary will come from the east, affirming Muhammad ﷺ and adhering to his religion, and he will kill the Dajjāl.” This is a rare (gharīb) ḥadīth. (3)
[Report from Jābir (may Allah be pleased with him)]
Imām Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal said: ʿAbd al-Malik ibn ʿAmr narrated to us; Zuhayr narrated to us; from Zayd—meaning Ibn Aslam—from Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh, who said:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ once looked out from one of the lava-field ridges (4) while we were with him and said, “How excellent a land is Madinah! When the Dajjāl appears, an angel will be stationed at every path leading to it, so he will not be able to enter. When that happens, Madinah will quake with its inhabitants three times; every hypocrite, male or female, will go out to him—and, he meant, most of those who go out to him will be women. That will be the Day of Deliverance, the day on which Madinah will cast off its impurity just as a bellows removes the dross from iron. With him will be seventy thousand Jews, each man wearing a crown and a decorated sword. He will pitch his pavilion on this red tract where the flood-waters converge.”
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said, “No tribulation—past or future until the Hour is established—is greater than the trial of the Dajjāl. Every prophet warned his nation about him, but I shall inform you of something that no prophet told his nation before me.” He then placed his hand on his eye (5) and said, “I bear witness that Allah is not one-eyed.”
Aḥmad alone recorded this; its chain is sound, and al-Ḥākim declared it authentic. (6)
