A report from Samurah ibn Jundub (may Allah be pleased with him)
Imām Aḥmad said: Abū Kāmil narrated to us; Zuhayr narrated to us; from al-Aswad ibn Qays; Thalabah ibn ʿIbād al-ʿAbdī—one of the people of Basra—related to me. He said:
“I once attended a sermon delivered by Samurah ibn Jundub. In it he mentioned a ḥadīth about the eclipse prayer, stating that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ preached after the eclipse prayer and said:
‘By Allah, the Hour will not be established until thirty great liars appear; the last of them will be the one-eyed Dajjāl. He is blind in his left eye, as though it were the eye of Abū Tiḥya (1). Whenever he appears—indeed, whenever he does emerge—he will claim that he is Allah. Whoever believes him, affirms him, and follows him, none of the righteous deeds he previously performed will benefit him. And whoever disbelieves in him and rejects him will not be punished for any of the deeds he formerly committed.’
Al-Ḥasan [al-Baṣrī] added: ‘…for any evil deed he had formerly committed. The Dajjāl will gain influence over the whole earth except the ḥaram and Bayt al-Maqdis. He will besiege the believers in Jerusalem, and they will be shaken with a violent shaking. Then Allah will destroy him, so much so that even the stump of a wall or the base of a tree will call out, “O believer, here is a Jew”—or he said: “Here is an unbeliever—come and kill him.” Yet none of this will happen until you see matters whose seriousness, in the realm of knowledge, will greatly escalate, and you will ask one another, “Did your Prophet mention anything to you about these?”—and until mountains are displaced from their places.’
He [Thalabah] thereafter attended another sermon of Samurah, and he neither advanced a single word nor delayed it from its original place.
The root of this ḥadīth concerning the eclipse prayer is found with the authors of the Four Sunan, and al-Tirmidhī, Ibn Ḥibbān, and al-Ḥākim in his Mustadrak also declared it sound (2).
Our shaykh al-Dhahabī said in his book Nabāʾ al-Dajjāl (3): Saʿīd, from Qatādah, from al-Ḥasan, from Samurah—marfūʿ: ‘The Dajjāl is blind in his left eye; over it is a thick piece of flesh.’
I say: This report with this chain is not found in the Musnad, nor in any of the six canonical books. It would have been more fitting for our shaykh either to cite the full isnād or to attribute it to a well-known work. Allah is the One who grants success.
[Another report from Samurah]
Aḥmad said: Rawḥ narrated to us; Saʿīd narrated to us, and ʿAbd al-Wahhāb; Saʿīd narrated to us; from Qatādah; from al-Ḥasan; from Samurah ibn Jundub: that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to say:
‘The Dajjāl will indeed emerge; he is blind in his left eye, over it is a thick piece of flesh. He will cure the blind, the leper, and he will raise the dead to life. He will say to the people, “I am your Lord.” Whoever says, “You are my lord,” has fallen into his trial; and whoever says, “My Lord is Allah,” until he dies, has been protected from his fitnah—there will be no trial [after him] for him and no punishment. He will remain on earth for as long as Allah wills. Then Jesus son of Mary (may Allah’s mercy be upon him) will come from…’
