saying:
“There has never been a prophet [after Noah] who did not warn his people about the Dajjāl, and I too am warning you about him.”
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then described him to us, saying,
“Perhaps some of those who have seen me or heard my words will still be alive to encounter him.”
They asked, “O Messenger of Allah, what will our hearts be like on that day?”
He replied, “Just as they are today—or better.”
Al-Tirmidhī then said: “There are additional reports on this topic from ʿAbd Allah ibn Busr, ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Ḥārith ibn Juzayy, ʿAbd Allah ibn Mughaffal, and Abū Hurayrah. This ḥadīth is ḥasan gharīb; we know it only through the narration of Khālid al-Ḥadhdhāʾ. Aḥmad also transmitted it through ʿAffān and ʿAbd al-Ṣamad, and Abū Dāwūd through Mūsā ibn Ismāʿīl—each of them from Ḥammād ibn Salamah, with this same chain. Aḥmad likewise reported part of it through Ghundar, from Shuʿbah, from Khālid al-Ḥadhdhāʾ. (1)
A ḥadīth from Ubayy ibn Kaʿb (may Allah be pleased with him)
Aḥmad narrated it through Ghundar, Rūḥ, Sulaymān ibn Dāwūd, and Wahb ibn Jarīr, all of them from Shuʿbah, from Ḥabīb ibn al-Zubayr. He said: “I heard ʿAbd Allah ibn Abī al-Hudhayl say that ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abzā heard ʿAbd Allah ibn Khabbāb relate that Ubayy ibn Kaʿb reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was mentioned in connection with the Dajjāl, whereupon he said,
‘One of his eyes is like a green glass bead. Seek Allah’s protection from the torment of the grave.’”
Aḥmad alone transmitted this ḥadīth. (2)
A ḥadīth from Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī (may Allah be pleased with him)
ʿAbd Allah, the son of Imām Aḥmad, said: I found this ḥadīth in my father’s book written in his own hand:
ʿAbd al-Mutāʿ ibn ʿAbd al-Wahhāb narrated to me; Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd al-Umawī narrated to us; Mujālid narrated to us; from Abū al-Waddāk, who said:
Abū Saʿīd said to me, “Do the Khawārij acknowledge the Dajjāl?”
I replied, “No.”
He said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
‘I am the seal of a thousand—or more—prophets, and every prophet who was followed warned his nation about the Dajjāl. I, however, have been shown concerning him what no one else was shown: he is one-eyed, and your Lord is not one-eyed. His right eye is blind, protruding and unmistakable, like a blob of phlegm on a whitewashed wall; his left eye is like a glittering star. He speaks every language. He carries with him a representation of Paradise that is green, with water flowing in it, and a representation of Hell that is black and smoking.’”
Aḥmad alone transmitted it. ʿAbd ibn Ḥumayd also recorded a similar report in his Musnad, from Ḥammād ibn Salamah, from al-Ḥajjāj, from ʿAṭiyyah, from Abū Saʿīd, raised to the Prophet. (3)
A ḥadīth from Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him)
Imām Aḥmad said: Bahz and ʿAffān narrated to us; they said: Ḥammād ibn Salamah narrated to us; Isḥāq ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn—
