and then bring him back to life. Once he has been revived he will say, “By Allah, I have never had clearer insight about you than I do now.” He continued: “The Dajjāl will then wish to kill him again, but he will not be given power over him.”
Abū Isḥāq said: It is said that this man is al-Khiḍr.
Muslim said: ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Dārimī narrated to me; Abū al-Yamān narrated to us; Shuʿayb narrated to us, from al-Zuhrī, with the same chain and wording. (1)
Muslim also said: Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Quhzād of Marw narrated to me; ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUthmān narrated to us; from Abū Ḥamzah; from Qays ibn Wahb; from Abū al-Waddāk; from Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī—may Allah be pleased with him—who said:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “The Dajjāl will emerge, and a man from among the believers will head toward him. The advance guards of the Dajjāl will meet him and ask, ‘Where are you going?’ He will reply, ‘I am going to this one who has appeared.’
“They will ask, ‘Do you not believe in our lord?’ He will answer, ‘There is no ambiguity concerning our Lord.’
“They will say, ‘Kill him.’ But some of them will say to the others, ‘Did your Lord not forbid you to kill anyone apart from him?’
“So they will take him to the Dajjāl. When the believer sees him he will proclaim, ‘O people, this is the Dajjāl of whom the Messenger of Allah ﷺ spoke!’
“The Dajjāl will order that he be stretched out and will say, ‘Seize him and strike him,’ so his back and belly will be beaten severely.
“He will then say, ‘Will you not believe in me?’ The man will answer, ‘You are the false Messiah.’
“The Dajjāl will then command that he be sawn in two from the crown of his head down to between his legs. He will then walk between the two halves and say to him, ‘Stand up,’ and the man will stand erect.
“He will ask, ‘Do you now believe in me?’ He will reply, ‘I have only become still more certain about you.’
“The man will then say, ‘O people, after me he will not be able to do this to anyone.’
“The Dajjāl will seize him to slaughter him, but a band of copper will be placed between his neck and collar-bone, so he will find no way to reach him. He will then take the man by his hands and feet and hurl him away; the people will think he has been thrown into the Fire, whereas in fact he has been cast into Paradise.”
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “This man will be the greatest martyr in the sight of the Lord of all the worlds.” (2)
[A collection of scattered narrations concerning the Dajjāl]
[A ḥadīth from Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq (may Allah be pleased with him)]
Imām Aḥmad said: Rawḥ narrated to us; Saʿīd ibn Abī ʿArūbah narrated to us, from Abū al-Tayyāḥ, from al-Mughīrah ibn Subayʿ, from ʿAmr ibn Ḥurayth—that Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq, may Allah be pleased with him, recovered from an illness, came out to the people and apologized for something, saying, “We intended nothing but good.” He then said:
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ told us that the Dajjāl will emerge in a land to the east called Khurāsān, and he will be followed by people whose faces are like hammered shields.”
Al-Tirmidhī and Ibn Mājah also transmitted it through the narration of Rawḥ ibn ʿUbādah, and al-Tirmidhī commented: “ḥasan gharīb.”
I say: ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Mūsā al-ʿAbsī likewise reported it from al-Ḥasan ibn Dīnār, from Abū al-Tayyāḥ; thus Rawḥ was not the sole narrator of it, as some have claimed—nor was Saʿīd ibn
