From Abū Rāfiʿ, through Abū Zurʿah al-Saybānī (1) Yaḥyā ibn Abī ʿAmr, from Abū Umāmah al-Bāhilī, who said:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ delivered a sermon to us in which the greater part was devoted to the Dajjāl; he related many reports about him and warned us against him. Among his words he said:
“Since Allah created the descendants of Adam, no tribulation (fitnah) on earth has been greater than the tribulation of the Dajjāl. Allah has not sent a prophet without charging him to warn his community about the Dajjāl. I am the last of the prophets and you are the last of the nations, and he will inevitably emerge among you. If he comes forth while I am still in your midst, I shall contend on behalf of every Muslim. If he comes forth after me, each person must contend on his own behalf, and Allah is my deputy over every Muslim. He will emerge from a gap between Syria and Iraq and will ravage to the right and to the left. O servants of Allah, O people, stand firm! I shall describe him to you in a way no prophet before me has described him.
He will begin by saying, ‘I am a prophet,’ though there will be no prophet after me; then he will say, ‘I am your Lord Most High,’ yet you will not see your Lord until you die. He is one-eyed, whereas your Lord—Mighty and Majestic—is not one-eyed. Written between his eyes is the word kāfir (disbeliever); every believer, whether literate or illiterate, will read it. Among his trials is that he will have with him something like a garden and a fire: his fire is really a garden, and his garden is really a fire. Whoever is tried by his fire should seek refuge with Allah and recite the opening verses of Sūrah al-Kahf; for him, it will become coolness and safety, just as the fire became for Abraham.
One of his trials is that he will say to a Bedouin, ‘If I resurrect your father and mother for you, will you testify that I am your Lord?’ The man will reply, ‘Yes.’ Two devils will then appear to him in the likeness of his father and mother and will say, ‘My son, follow him, for he is your Lord.’ Another of his trials is that he will be given power over a single person: he will kill him and saw him in two until the halves fall apart. Then he will say, ‘Look at this servant of mine; I shall now bring him back, even though he claims to have a Lord other than me.’ Allah will raise that man, and the vile creature will ask him, ‘Who is your Lord?’ He will answer, ‘My Lord is Allah, and you are the enemy of Allah—you are the Dajjāl. By Allah, I have never had clearer insight concerning you than I do today.’”
Abū al-Ḥasan [al-Ṭanāfasī]—meaning ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad—said: al-Muḥāribī narrated to us; ʿUbayd Allah ibn al-Walīd al-Waṣṣāfī (2) narrated to us, from ʿAṭiyyah, from Abū Saʿīd, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “That man will be the highest of my nation in rank in Paradise.” Abū Saʿīd added, “By Allah, we never assumed that this man would be anyone other than ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb—until he departed this world.” al-Muḥāribī continued:
We then returned to the narration of Abū Rāfiʿ, who said:
“Among his trials is that he will command the sky to rain, and it will rain; he will command the earth to bring forth produce, and it will bring forth. He will pass by a community who deny him, and none of their livestock will survive—they will all perish. Then he will pass by a community who believe him; he will command the sky to rain, and it will rain, and he will command the earth to produce, and it will produce, so that their animals will return that same evening heavier, fatter, with fuller flanks and brimming udders, more so than ever before. There will remain no portion of the earth that he does not tread upon and dominate—except Mecca and Medina. He will not approach any of the passes leading to them without being met by angels brandishing unsheathed swords, until he camps at the Red Hill, at the edge of the salt-marsh. Then Medina will quake with its people three times, and every hypocrite, male and female, will go out to him. Thus it will cast out its impurity just as a bellows casts out the dross of iron.
That day will be called the Day of Deliverance.” Umm Sharik bint Abī al-ʿAkar said
