I said, “And what comes after that?”
He answered, “If you were to breed a mare, her foal would not be ridden before the Hour is established.” (1)
Al-Bukhārī and Muslim also relate—from Shaybān ibn ʿAbd ar-Raḥmān, from Yaḥyā ibn Abī Kathīr, from Abū Salamah, from Abū Hurayrah—that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Shall I inform you about the Dajjāl with a report no prophet ever imparted to his people? He is one-eyed, and he will bring with him what looks like both Paradise and Fire. What he calls Paradise is in fact Fire. I warn you against him just as Noah warned his people.” (2)
Muslim transmits—from Muḥammad ibn al-Munkadir—who said: I saw Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allah swear by Allah that Ibn Ṣayyād is the Dajjāl. I asked, “Do you swear by Allah Most High?” He replied, “I heard ʿUmar swear to that in the presence of the Prophet ﷺ, and the Prophet did not object.” (3)
It is likewise reported—from Nāfiʿ—that Ibn ʿUmar met Ibn Ṣayyād on one of Medina’s roads and addressed him with words that angered him, whereupon Ibn Ṣayyād swelled until he filled the lane. In another wording he snorted with the harshest bray a donkey can make, and Ibn ʿUmar struck him until his staff splintered. Ibn ʿUmar then entered upon his sister Ḥafṣah, who said, “What did you intend by confronting Ibn Ṣayyād? Do you not know that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
‘He will emerge because of a fury that overtakes him’?” (4)
Some scholars have said: Certain Companions suspected Ibn Ṣayyād of being the greater Dajjāl, but he was not; he was merely one of the minor impostors. It is established in the Ṣaḥīḥ that he travelled with Abū Saʿīd between Mecca and Medina, and that Ibn Ṣayyād complained to him about what people were saying—that he was the Dajjāl. He then said to Abū Saʿīd, “Did not the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, ‘He will not enter Medina,’ yet I was born there? And, ‘He will have no offspring,’ yet children have been born to me? And, ‘He is an unbeliever,’ whereas I have embraced Islam?” He added, “Even so, I know more about him—and about where he is—than anyone else; and were it offered to me to be him, I would not dislike it.” (5)
Aḥmad said: ʿAbd al-Mutaʿāl ibn ʿAbd al-Wahhāb narrated to us; Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd al-Umawī related to us; Mujālid, from Abū al-Waddāk, from Abū Saʿīd, who said: Ibn Ṣayyād was mentioned in the presence of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, whereupon ʿUmar said, “He claims that nothing passes by him except that it speaks to him.” (6)
Aḥmad also said: Abū Saʿīd, the client of Banū Hāshim, narrated to us; Mahdī ibn ʿImrān al-Māzinī told me; I heard—
