that will sweep through the people like the scab that strikes sheep; and a tribulation whose fighting will enter every Muslim household; and that a man will be given one thousand dinars yet still be displeased with them; and that the Romans will break the truce and come against you under eighty banners, each banner accompanied by twelve thousand men. (1)

Imām Aḥmad said: ʿAbd al-Ṣamad and ʿAffān narrated to us; they said: Hammām narrated to us; Qatādah narrated to us, from al-Ḥasan, from Ziyād ibn Ribāḥ, from Abū Hurayrah, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Hasten to perform good deeds before six things: the rising of the sun from the West, the Antichrist (al-Dajjāl), the smoke, the Beast of the earth, the private death of one of you, and the affairs of the masses.” Qatādah used to say: when he said, “and the affairs of the masses,” he intended the matter of the Hour. Muslim likewise transmitted it from Shuʿbah and ʿAbd al-Ṣamad, both from Hammām with this chain; Aḥmad later reported it alone, from Abū Dāwūd, from ʿImrān al-Qaṭṭān, from Qatādah, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ribāḥ, from Abū Hurayrah, as a marfūʿ narration with similar wording. (2)

Aḥmad also said: Sulaymān narrated to us; Ismāʿīl narrated to us; al-ʿAlāʾ informed me, from his father, from Abū Hurayrah, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Hasten to do good deeds before six: the sun’s rising from the West, the Antichrist, the smoke, the Beast, the personal demise of any one of you, and the public turmoil.” Muslim recorded it from Ismāʿīl ibn Jaʿfar al-Madanī with the same wording. (3)

Imām Aḥmad further said: Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah narrated to us, from Furāt, from Abū al-Ṭufayl, from Ḥudhayfah ibn Asīd, who said: The Prophet ﷺ looked in on us while we were discussing the Hour and asked, “What are you talking about?” They replied, “We are discussing the Hour.” He said: “The Hour will not come until you see ten signs: the smoke, the Antichrist, the Beast, the sun’s rising from the West, the descent of Jesus son of Mary, Gog and Magog, and three landslides—one in the East, one in the West, and one in the Arabian Peninsula—and the last of them will be a fire that will emerge from the direction of ʿAdan, driving the people to their place of assembly.”

Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ʿAbd Allāh, the son of Imām Aḥmad, said: a word is missing here.

Aḥmad then narrated it through Sufyān al-Thawrī and Shuʿbah, both from Furāt al-Qaẓẓāz, from Abū al-Ṭufayl ʿĀmir ibn Wāthilah, from Ḥudhayfah ibn Asīd Abū Sarīḥah al-Ghifārī, and he mentioned it, adding: “and a fire that will emerge from the depths of ʿAdan, herding—or gathering—the people; it will stay with them wherever they spend the night and rest with them wherever they take their midday pause.”

Shuʿbah said: A man narrated this report to me from Abū al-Ṭufayl, from Abū Sarīḥah, but he did not attribute it to the Prophet ﷺ. One of those two men said: the descent of Jesus son of Mary; while the other said: a wind that will cast them into the sea.

Muslim also transmitted it through Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah and Shuʿbah, from Furāt al-Qaẓẓāz, from Abū al-Ṭufayl, from Ḥudhayfah ibn Asīd with this wording, and he recorded another version via Shuʿbah, from ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Rufayʿ, from Abū al-Ṭufayl, from Ḥudhayfah ibn Asīd as a mawqūf narration.
