Al-Qurṭubī said in his Tadhkirah: It is reported from Ḥudhayfah ibn al-Yamān, from the Prophet ﷺ, that he said:
“Ruin will begin at the outer edges of the earth until Egypt is laid waste—though Egypt had long been secure from destruction. Then Basra will be ruined: its destruction will be by flooding, whereas Egypt’s will be by the drying up of the Nile; Mecca will be ruined by the Abyssinians, Madinah by famine, Yemen by locusts, al-Ubulla by siege, Persia by brigands, the Turks at the hands of the Daylam, the Daylam at the hands of the Armenians, the Armenians at the hands of the Khazars, the Khazars at the hands of the Turks, and the Turks by thunderbolts. Sind will be ruined by India, India by China, China by sand, Abyssinia by a violent earthquake, al-Zawraʾ by the Sufyānī, al-Rawḥāʾ by a landslide, and Iraq by drought.”
He then added: This was also cited by Abū al-Faraj Ibn al-Jawzī, who said, “I have heard that al-Andalus will be ruined by the barren wind. Allah knows best.”
This ḥadīth is not found in any of the reliable compilations. It is far more likely to be unsound—indeed, to have been fabricated—or at best to be a statement attributed only to Ḥudhayfah, though it is not authentically traceable to him either. Allah knows best.
[Section on enumerating the portents that have already appeared]
Imām Aḥmad said: Ḥasan narrated to us; Khalaf—meaning Ibn Khalīfah—narrated to us, from Abū Junāb, from his father, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr, who said: I came in to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was performing a slow, deliberate ablution (1). He raised his head, looked at me, and said:
“O people of this ummah, six things will befall you: the first is the death of your Prophet.”
He (the narrator) said: It was as though my heart was torn from its place.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said, “That is one.”
He continued: “Wealth will become so abundant among you that a man will be given ten thousand yet remain displeased with it.”
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “That is two.”
He continued: “A tribulation will enter the house of each one of you.”
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “That is three.”
He continued: “And a widespread death resembling the quʿāṣ (2) that strikes sheep.”
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “That is four. And there will be a truce between you and Banū al-Aṣfar; they will muster against you for nine months—the term of a woman’s pregnancy—then they will show themselves more prone to treachery than you.”
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “That is five.”
He continued: “And the conquest of a city.”
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “That is six.”
I asked, “Messenger of Allah, which city is that?”
He replied, “Constantinople.”
This chain of transmission is questionable on account of some of its narrators, yet it is supported by another route that is sound (3).
Al-Bukhārī said: al-Ḥumaydī narrated to us; al-Walīd ibn Muslim narrated to us; ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-ʿAlāʾ ibn Zabr narrated to us. He said: I heard Busr ibn ʿUbayd Allāh, who heard Abū Idrīs, who said: I heard ʿAwf ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) say: I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ during the expedition of Tabūk while he was in a leather tent, and he said:
“Count six things that will precede the Hour:”
