Ibn Abī Ḥātim said:
My father narrated to us; al-ʿAbbās ibn al-Walīd narrated to us; Zayd ibn Yaḥyā ibn ʿUbayd al-Khuzaʿī narrated to us; Saʿīd ibn Bashīr narrated to us, from Qatādah, who said:
Allah offered Luqmān the Wise a choice between prophethood and wisdom, and he preferred wisdom. Qatādah added: Gabriel came to him while he was asleep and scattered wisdom over him, and he awoke speaking it fluently.
Saʿīd continued: I heard Qatādah say that someone asked Luqmān, “How did you choose wisdom over prophethood when your Lord had offered you the choice?” He replied, “Had He sent prophethood to me as a binding decree, I would have hoped for success through Him and hoped to fulfill its duties; but since He left me to choose, I feared I might prove unequal to the weight of prophethood, so wisdom was dearer to me.”
This report is subject to reservation, because the scholars have critiqued Saʿīd ibn Bashīr’s narrations from Qatādah.
As for what Saʿīd ibn Abī ʿArūbah transmitted from Qatādah regarding the verse, “And We certainly gave Luqmān wisdom” (31:12), he said: “It means deep understanding in Islam; he was not a prophet, nor was revelation sent to him.” Several other early authorities stated the same, among them Mujāhid, Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib, and Ibn ʿAbbās. Allah knows best.
