he replied, “Then enter your house.” I said, “And if he forces his way into my house?” He said, “Then go to your mosque and do this”—and he clasped his right hand upon the joint of his arm—“and say, ‘My Lord is Allah,’ until you die upon that.” (1)
Abu Dāwūd said: ʿAmr ibn ʿUthmān narrated to us; my father narrated to us; Shihāb ibn Khirāsh narrated to us, from al-Qāsim ibn Ghazwān, from Isḥāq ibn Rāshid al-Jazarī, from Sālim, who said: ʿAmr ibn Wābiṣa related to me from his father, from Ibn Masʿūd, who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say—he mentioned part of the report of Abū Bakrah—“All who are killed in it will be in the Fire.” I asked, “When will that be, Ibn Masʿūd?” He answered, “In the days of rampant killing, when a man no longer feels safe with the one sitting beside him.” I said, “What do you command me to do if I reach that time?” He said, “Hold back your tongue and your hand, and be like a saddle-cloth among the saddle-cloths of your house.” Wābiṣa—the narrator—added: When ʿUthmān was killed my heart began to race, so I mounted and rode until I reached Damascus, where I met Khuraym ibn Fātik al-Asadī. He swore by Allah, besides Whom there is no deity, that he had heard it from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ just as Ibn Masʿūd had narrated. (2)
Abu Dāwūd also said: ʿUthmān ibn Abī Shaybah narrated to us; Wakīʿ narrated to us, from ʿUthmān al-Shahhām; Muslim ibn Abī Bakrah narrated to me, from his father, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “A tribulation is coming: the one lying down during it is better than the one sitting, the one sitting is better than the one standing, the one standing is better than the one walking, and the one walking is better than the one running.” I asked, “O Messenger of Allah, what do you command me?” He said, “Whoever owns camels, let him stay with his camels; whoever owns sheep, let him stay with his sheep; and whoever owns land, let him remain on his land.” I asked, “What about someone who possesses none of that?” He said, “Then let him take his sword, strike its edge against a stone, and flee however he can.” Muslim recorded a similar narration from ʿUthmān al-Shahhām. (3)
Abu Dāwūd further said: [Yazīd ibn Khālid al-Ramli narrated to us;] al-Mufaḍḍal narrated to us, from ʿIyāsh, from Bukayr, from Busr ibn Saʿīd, from Ḥusayn ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Ashjaʿī, who said that he heard Saʿd ibn Abī Waqqāṣ, concerning this ḥadīth, relate from the Prophet ﷺ that I asked, “O Messenger of Allah, what if someone enters my house and reaches out his hand to kill me?” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Be like the son of Ādam,” and [Yazīd] recited: “If you stretch forth your hand against me to kill me…” (al-Māʾidah 28). This version is unique to Abu Dāwūd. (4)
Aḥmad said: Qutaybah ibn Saʿīd narrated to us; Layth ibn Saʿd narrated to us, from ʿIyāsh ibn ʿAbbās, from Bukayr ibn ʿAbd Allah, from Busr ibn Saʿīd, that Saʿd ibn Abī Waqqāṣ said, during the turmoil that befell ʿUthmān ibn ʿAffān: “I bear witness that
