Al-Bukhari related—through the isnād of al-Zuhri, from Hind bint al-Harith al-Firasiyyah—that Umm Salamah, the Prophet’s wife, said:
The Prophet ﷺ awoke one night in alarm and exclaimed:
“Glorified is Allah! What treasures have been sent down this night, and what tribulations (fitan) have been sent down! Who will awaken the occupants of the chambers”—meaning his wives—“so that they may pray? Many a woman who appears clothed in this world will be naked in the Hereafter.” (1)
Al-Bukhari and Muslim likewise transmitted—through al-Zuhri, from ʿUrwah, from Usāmah ibn Zayd—who said:
The Prophet ﷺ stood on one of the fortified heights (ʿuṭum) of Madinah (2) and said:
“Do you see what I see?”
They replied, “No.”
He said, “Indeed I see tribulations falling among your houses like raindrops.” (3)
Al-Bukhari also reported—through al-Zuhri, from Saʿīd, from Abū Hurayrah—that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“Time will contract, knowledge will diminish, miserliness will be cast (into hearts), tribulations will appear, and harj will multiply.”
They asked, “O Messenger of Allah, what is harj?”
He replied, “Killing, killing.”
Al-Bukhari narrated the same report as well from al-Zuhri, through Ḥumayd, from Abū Hurayrah (4), and again through al-Aʿmash, from Shaqīq, from ʿAbd-Allah ibn Masʿūd and Abū Mūsā (5).
Al-Bukhari said: Muḥammad ibn Yūsuf related to us; Sufyān related to us, from al-Zubayr ibn ʿAdiyy, who said:
We came to Anas ibn Mālik and complained to him about what we were suffering at the hands of al-Ḥajjāj. He said,
“Be patient, for there never comes a time upon people but that which follows it is worse than it—until you meet your Lord. I heard this from your Prophet ﷺ.”
Al-Tirmidhī also transmitted it through al-Thawrī and declared it sound and authentic (6).
The common folk paraphrase this ḥadith in their own saying:
“Every year you grow more debased.” (7)
Al-Bukhari and Muslim transmitted—through al-Zuhri, from Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib and from Abū Salamah, from Abū Hurayrah—that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“There will be tribulations: the one who sits during them is better than the one who stands; the one who stands is better than the one who walks; the one who walks is better than the one who runs. Whoever exposes himself to them, they will seize him; so whoever finds a shelter or refuge from them, let him take refuge therein.” (8)
