Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

ʿAbbās—who is al-Mahdī, the son of al-Manṣūr—through the route cited by al-Dāraqutnī: Ibrāhīm ibn ʿAbd al-Ṣamad ibn Mūsā al-Hāshimī narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn al-Walīd al-Qurashī narrated to us; Asbāṭ ibn Muḥammad al-Ḍabbī and Ṣilah ibn Sulaymān al-Wāsiṭī narrated to us, from Sulaymān al-Taymī, from Qatādah, from Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib, from ʿUthmān ibn ʿAffān, who said: “I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: ‘The Mahdī will be from the descendants of my uncle al-ʿAbbās.’” Al-Dāraqutnī judged this report to be gharīb (solitary); it is uniquely transmitted by Muḥammad ibn al-Walīd, the client of Banū Hāshim, and, he added, “it is known only from our shaykh Abū Isḥāq.” Abū Dāwūd also said: Muḥammad ibn al-Muthannā narrated to us; Muʿādh ibn Hishām narrated to us; my father related to me, from Qatādah, from Ṣāliḥ Abū al-Khalīl, from a companion of his, from Umm Salamah, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ, who reported that the Prophet ﷺ said: “At the death of a caliph disagreement will arise. A man from the people of Madinah will flee to Mecca. Some of the Meccans will come to him, bring him out although he is unwilling, and pledge their allegiance to him between the Corner and the Station. An expeditionary force will then be sent against him from Syria, but it will be swallowed up in the desert between Mecca and Madinah. When people see this, the Abdal of Syria and select contingents of Iraq will come and pay him homage. Then a man from Quraysh, whose maternal uncles are from Kalb, will appear and send an army against them; they will defeat it. That is the expedition of Kalb—ruined is the one who misses the spoils of Kalb. He will distribute wealth and rule the people according to the sunnah of their Prophet ﷺ, and Islam will lay down its flank (1) upon the earth. He will remain for seven years, then he will die, and the Muslims will perform the funeral prayer over him.” (2) Abū Dāwūd further said: Hārūn—meaning Ibn al-Mughīrah—narrated to us; ʿAmr ibn Abī Qays narrated to us; Muṭarrif ibn Ṭarīf narrated to us, from Abū al-Ḥasan, from Hilāl ibn ʿAmr, who said: I heard ʿAlī say that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ declared: “A man will emerge from beyond the river who will be called al-Hārith, or Harrāth; at the head of his forces will be a man named Manṣūr. He will pave the way—or establish authority—for the family of Muhammad, just as Quraysh prepared the ground for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Supporting him”—or he said, “responding to him”—“is incumbent upon every believer.” (3) Ibn Mājah recorded: Ḥarmalah ibn Yaḥyā al-Miṣrī and Ibrāhīm ibn Saʿīd al-Jawharī narrated to us; they said: Abū Ṣāliḥ ʿAbd al-Ghaffār ibn Dāwūd al-Ḥarrānī narrated to us; Ibn Lahīʿah narrated to us, from Abū Zurʿah—ʿAmr ibn Jābir al-Ḥaḍramī—from ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Ḥārith ibn Jazʾ al-Zubaydī, who said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “A people will come forth from the East and will prepare the way for the Mahdī,” meaning his authority. (4) Ibn Mājah also said: ʿUthmān ibn Abī Shaybah narrated to us; Muʿāwiyah ibn Hishām narrated to us; ʿAlī ibn Ṣāliḥ narrated to us, from Yazīd ibn Abī Ziyād, from Ibrāhīm, from ʿAlqamah, from ʿAbd Allāh, who said: “While we were in the presence of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when…"
