in another narration he said: When he returned to his house the Quraysh came to him and asked, “And what will follow?” He replied, “Then there will be al-harj (widespread killing).” (1)
Abū Dāwūd then related—through Sufyān al-Thawrī, Abū Bakr ibn ʿAyyāsh, Zāʾidah, Fiṭr, and Muḥammad ibn ʿUbayd, all of them reporting from ʿĀṣim ibn Abī al-Nujūd (the son of Bahdalah), from Zir ibn Ḥubaysh, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd—that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“If only a single day of this world were left…”
Zāʾidah added: “…Allah would lengthen that day,”
and they all agreed on the wording, “…until He raises up within it a man from me—or from my Household—whose name will correspond to mine, and whose father’s name will correspond to my father’s.”
Fiṭr’s version continues: “…and he will fill the earth with equity and justice just as it had been filled with oppression and tyranny.”
In Sufyān’s narration it reads: “The world will not come to an end until a man from my Household, whose name matches mine, rules the Arabs.”
Aḥmad recorded it likewise from ʿUmar ibn ʿUbayd, from Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah, and from Sufyān al-Thawrī—all of them transmitting through ʿĀṣim. Al-Tirmidhī also related it through the two Sufyāns and said: “It is ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ.” Al-Tirmidhī added: “Reports on this topic also come from ʿAlī, Abū Saʿīd, Umm Salamah, and Abū Hurayrah.”
Al-Tirmidhī then said: ʿAbd al-Jabbār ibn al-ʿAlāʾ al-ʿAṭṭār narrated to us; Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah narrated to us, from ʿĀṣim, from Zir, from ʿAbd Allāh, from the Prophet ﷺ who said:
“A man from my Household will assume authority; his name will correspond to mine.”
ʿĀṣim said: Abū Ṣāliḥ informed us on the authority of Abū Hurayrah, who said, “If only a single day of this world remained, Allah would lengthen that day until he did assume authority.”
He then declared: “This ḥadith is ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ.” (3)
Abū Dāwūd also said: Sahl ibn Tammām ibn Bazīʿ narrated to us; ʿImrān al-Qaṭṭān narrated to us, from Qatādah, from Abū Naḍrah, from Abū Saʿīd, who said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ proclaimed:
“The Mahdī is from me: he has a broad forehead and an aquiline nose. He will fill the earth with equity and justice just as it had been filled with oppression and tyranny, and he will rule for seven years.” (4)
Abū Dāwūd further said: Aḥmad ibn Ibrāhīm narrated to us; ʿAbd Allāh ibn Jaʿfar al-Raqqī narrated to us; Abū al-Malīḥ al-Ḥasan ibn ʿUmar narrated to us, from Ziyād ibn Bayān, from ʿAlī ibn Nufayl, from Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib, from Umm Salamah, who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say:
“The Mahdī is from my lineage, from the descendants of Fāṭimah.”
ʿAbd Allāh ibn Jaʿfar remarked: “I heard Abū al-Malīḥ extolling ʿAlī ibn Nufayl and speaking well of his piety.” Ibn Mājah recorded the same report from Abū Bakr ibn Abī Shaybah, from Aḥmad ibn ʿAbd al-Malik, from Abū al-Malīḥ al-Raqqī, through the same chain. (5)
As for the ḥadith transmitted by Ibn ʿAsākir in the biography of Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn
