for al-ghurabāʾ (the strangers).
It was asked, “And who are the strangers?”
He replied, “Those who pull away from their tribes.” (1)
Ibn Mājah also transmitted this ḥadīth from Anas and from Abū Hurayrah. (2)
Aḥmad said: Hārūn ibn Maʿrūf narrated to us; ʿAbd Allāh ibn Wahb informed us; Abū Ṣakhr told me that Abū Ḥāzim related to him, from a son of Saʿd ibn Abī Waqqāṣ, who said:
“I heard my father say: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, ‘Faith began as something strange, and it will return to being as it began; so glad tidings on that day for al-ghurabāʾ (the strangers), when the people have become corrupt. By Him in whose hand is the soul of Abū al-Qāsim, faith will withdraw from these two mosques just as a serpent withdraws into its lair.’” (3)
Aḥmad also said: Ḥasan ibn Muḥammad ibn Mūsā narrated to us; Ibn Luhayʿah narrated to us; Jamīl al-Aslamī narrated, from Sahl ibn Saʿd al-Sāʿidī, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“O Allah, let me not live to see a time”—or he said: “Do not live to see a time—when the scholar is not followed, the forbearing person is not shown any deference, people’s hearts are the hearts of non-Arabs while their tongues are the tongues of the Arabs.” Aḥmad alone reported this. (4)
[Chapter: The Splitting of the Communities]
Ibn Mājah said: Abū Bakr ibn Abī Shaybah narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn Bishr narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr narrated to us, from Abū Salamah, from Abū Hurayrah, who said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “The Jews split into seventy-one sects, and my community will split into seventy-three sects.”
Abū Dāwūd likewise transmitted it from Wahb ibn Baqiyyah, from Khālid, from Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr. (5)
Ibn Mājah further said: ʿAmr ibn ʿUthmān ibn Saʿīd ibn Kathīr ibn Dīnār al-Ḥimṣī narrated to us; ʿAbbād ibn Yūsuf narrated to us; Ṣafwān ibn ʿAmr narrated to us, from Rāshid ibn Saʿd, from ʿAwf ibn Mālik, who said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“The Jews split into seventy-one sects: one is in Paradise and seventy are in the Fire. The Christians split into seventy-two sects: seventy-one are in the Fire and one is in Paradise. By Him in whose hand is my soul, my ummah will surely split into seventy-three sects: one is in Paradise and seventy-two are in the Fire.”
It was asked, “O Messenger of Allah, who are they?”
He said, “al-Jamāʿah (the mainstream community).”
Ibn Mājah alone related this report, and its chain of transmission is acceptable. (6)
