—praise be to Allah—and that the troops should equip themselves, strive for mastery in horsemanship and the shooting of arrows, and remain in a constant state of readiness so that, whenever they are called, they answer at once. Ready yourselves, therefore, and prepare for combat against the Franks, as Allah Most High says:
“Prepare against them whatever force you can muster, and the tethered horses, by which you may frighten the enemy of Allah and your enemy.” (al-Anfal 60)
It is firmly established in the hadith that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, once proclaimed from the pulpit:
“Verily, strength is [skill in] shooting.” (1)
In another hadith he said:
“Shoot and ride, but shooting is dearer to me.” (2)
On Monday, after the noon (zuhr) prayer, a session was convened in the Dār al-Saʿāda to investigate Chief Judge Jamāl al-Dīn al-Mardāwī, the Ḥanbalī, pursuant to a noble decree that had arrived from Egypt. The inquiry centered on the fact that many witnesses attending his court had been authorizing the sale of endowments without fulfilling the conditions of the school, certifying insolvency in the same way, and other similar matters. The session then concluded.
The Clash among the Amirs in Egypt (3):
In the final ten days of Jumada al-Ākhirah, news reached us that the great amir Yalbughā al-Khāṣṣakī had been confronted by a group of amirs led by Amir Sayf al-Dīn Ṭaybughā al-Ṭawīl. Yalbughā marched out against them to the Qubbat al-Qaṣr, where they engaged him. He killed a number of them and wounded others, and the affair ended with the capture of Ṭaybughā al-Ṭawīl, who was wounded, and the capture of Arghūn al-Isʿardī (4), the dawādār, together with many amirs of the thousand and of the ṭablakhānah corps. A tremendous tumult ensued, yet the great amir Yalbughā remained secure in his power, aided and supported—praise and gratitude be to Allah.
On Saturday, the second of Rajab, Amir Sayf al-Dīn Baydamur, formerly the deputy of Damascus, set out for Egypt at the summons of Amir Yalbughā, so as to affirm his mandate to put to sea in order to fight the Franks and, Allah willing, to conquer Cyprus. And Allah, exalted is He, knows best.
