the venerable, long-lived shaykh, Sadr Badr al-Din Muḥammad (1) ibn Aḥmad (2) al-Zaqāq (3), better known as Ibn al-Jawkhī (4), and over Shaykh Ṣalāḥ al-Din Muḥammad (5) ibn Shākir al-Kutubī (6), who stood unrivalled in his field and compiled a valuable chronicle of roughly ten volumes. He had committed it to memory, discussed it with his peers, and benefitted others—may Allah have mercy on him and pardon him. — End.
The death of the preacher Jamāl al-Din Maḥmūd (8) ibn Jumlah and Taj al-Din’s assumption of his duties thereafter:
His death occurred on Monday after the noon prayer, shortly before ‘Aṣr. In his place the Chief Judge, Taj al-Din al-Subkī, the Shāfiʿī, led the congregation in the ‘Aṣr prayer from the miḥrāb, having already led them at Fajr and recited at the end of Sūrat al-Māʾidah, from Allah’s words: “On the Day when Allah gathers the messengers” (al-Māʾidah 5:109). When the sun had risen and the time of dislike had passed, the funeral prayer for the preacher Jamāl al-Din was performed at the Gate of the Sermon. The mosque was packed, and his bier was carried out through the Barīd Gate, accompanied by a crowd of commoners and others. A great multitude is said to have attended his burial in al-Ṣāliḥiyyah.
Some ignorant folk behaved rudely toward the Shāfiʿī Chief Judge; several of them were seized and disciplined. The judge himself attended the noon prayer that day and continued to officiate the noon and afternoon prayers on the following days, coming to the congregational mosque in procession with jurists, dignitaries, and others, both going and returning. On Friday Shaykh Jamāl al-Din, the son of the Chief Judge, delivered the sermon on his behalf, while Taj al-Din was prevented from officiating until the robe of investiture should arrive.
On Monday, after the afternoon prayer, the funeral prayer was offered for Shaykh Shihāb al-Din Aḥmad (9) ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān (10) al-Baʿlabakkī.
