The people had witnessed nothing comparable in recent times—choice riding-camels and led mounts, mamluk retainers, and an awe-inspiring display of magnificence. Most of the aṭlāb had gone on ahead one day earlier. The Sultan reached the Umayyad Mosque before the noon adhān and, together with the Egyptian emirs who were with him and the deputy of Syria, performed the prayer in the Mausoleum of ʿUthmān. He then went straight out through Bab al-Naṣr toward al-Kiswah, while crowds thronged the streets and rooftops as usual. The festive decorations still adorned most of the gold-smiths’ quarter, the khawāṣṣīn, and Bab al-Barīd on that day, and they remained in place for about ten days (1).
On Saturday, the eleventh of Shawwāl, a robe of honor was bestowed upon Shaykh ʿAlāʾ al-Dīn al-Anṣārī (2) when the office of ḥisba was restored to him, and ʿImād al-Dīn ibn al-Shirjī (3) was dismissed.
The mahmal departed, as customary, on Thursday, the sixteenth of Shawwāl, with Emir Muṣṭafā al-Bīrī in charge.
On Thursday and Friday four emirs died in Damascus: Tashtamur Zafar (4), Taybugha al-Fīl (5), Nawruz (6)—one of the commanders of a thousand—and Tamur al-Muhimmandār (7). The last had been a commander of a thousand, chief ḥājib al-ḥujjāb, and at one time deputy governor of Gaza. Later the Egyptians turned against him and stripped him of his emirate. He fell ill, remained so, and died on Friday. He was buried on Saturday in the mausoleum he had built at al-Ṣūfiyya, though not inside it but at its doorway, as though taking leave of it or repenting for having built it over the graves of Muslims (may Allah have mercy on him).
Emir Nāṣir al-Dīn ibn Lāqūsh (8) died on Monday, the twentieth of Shawwāl, and was buried at al-Qubaybāt. He had served as deputy in Baalbek and in Ḥimṣ, after which news of him and his brother Kujkun (9) was cut off and the two were banished to various lands. Emir Yalbugha later became reconciled with them and reinstated their stipends (10) with tablakhānas, but Nāṣir al-Dīn did not live long thereafter and passed to the mercy of Allah. He left behind many fine endowments: at ʿAqbat al-Rummāna he built a useful, handsome caravanserai; in Baalbek he endowed a mosque, a bathhouse, a caravanserai, and other facilities. He was fifty-six years old.
