Bahāʾ al-Dīn (1) ibn al-Marjānī, the builder of the al-Fawqānī Congregational Mosque (2), passed away. The place had originally been no more than a small mosque, but he rebuilt it as a Friday mosque and instituted the khuṭbah there; I was the first to preach in it, in 748 AH. He had also heard a few hadiths.
News likewise reached us of the killing of Emir Sayf (3) ibn Faḍl ibn ʿĪsā ibn Muhannā, one of the gallant and generous Arab chieftains who had more than once held the leadership of the house of Muhannā, as his father had before him. A cousin of his attacked him and, as has been reported, slew him without intending to take his life. When the assailant raised his sword against him, Sayf tried to defend himself, but the blow struck him on the head and split it open. He lived only a few days after that and then died—may Allah have mercy on him. And so the matter ended.
Dismissal of Manjak from Damascus
On Sunday, the 2nd of Dhū al-Ḥijjah, an emir arrived from Egypt bearing the diploma for the deputy-governorship of Damascus, announcing that Emir Sayf al-Dīn Manjak was being transferred to the deputyship of the fortified city of Ṣafad. The next morning—the Day of ʿArafah—he left the Dār al-Saʿādah and made for the terrace of al-Mizzah on his way to Ṣafad. He spent the ʿĪd on that terrace and then departed toward Ṣafad. Many mischief-makers, wine-drinkers, and the like grew bold and rejoiced at his departure (4).
On the same day of ʿĪd the Sultan’s letter was read at the Dār al-Saʿādah before the emirs. It expressly delegated authority over them once again to his emir ʿAlāʾ al-Dīn ʿAlī al-Mardānī, ordering them to obey, honor, and respect him, and to thank and praise him.
Emir Shihāb al-Dīn ibn Ṣubḥ (5) arrived from the deputyship of Ṣafad and took up residence in his house outside the city, near the outer Thamiyyah.
On Saturday, the 21st of Dhū al-Ḥijjah, a courier came with word that the Chief Chamberlain, Ṭaydmar al-Ismāʿīlī, had been exiled to the city of Ḥamāh, dismissed from office, and left with nothing but a sirjīn allowance; Allah knows best.
