Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

A very extraordinary incident took place:

On Sunday, the fifteenth of Jumādā al-Ūlā, the Hanbalī judge (1) took charge of a group of Jews who had shown a form of mockery toward Islam and its people. They had carried one of their own, feigning him dead, on a bier while chanting the tahlīl as Muslims do when accompanying a corpse and reciting:

“Say, He is Allah, One, (1)
Allah, the Eternal Refuge, (2)
He neither begets nor is born, (3)
and there is none comparable to Him.” ⦗Sūrat al-Ikhlāṣ 1–4⦘

When the Muslims of their quarter heard of this, they seized the offenders and brought them before the deputy of the Sultanate, who in turn remitted them to the Hanbalī judge. Circumstances required their submission, so three of them embraced Islam that very day, and three children followed one of the converts. The next day another eight accepted Islam. The Muslims then paraded the new converts through the markets, proclaiming the tahlīl and the takbīr. The shopkeepers lavished many gifts upon them, after which they were escorted to the congregational mosque where they performed the prayer; they were then taken to Dār al-Saʿāda, where further arrangements were made on their behalf. The procession returned amid joyful clamour, cries of glorification, and praise. It was a memorable day indeed, and to Allah belong all praise and favour. Finished, and Allah knows best.

The Sultanate of al-Malik al-Ṣāliḥ
Ṣalāḥ al-Dīn Ṣāliḥ ibn al-Malik al-Nāṣir Muḥammad ibn al-Malik al-Manṣūr Qalāwūn al-Ṣāliḥī:

During the middle ten days of the month of Rajab, a courier dispatch arrived from Egypt announcing the deposition of Sultan al-Malik al-Nāṣir Ḥasan ibn al-Nāṣir ibn Qalāwūn, owing to the dissension of the amirs against him and their unanimous decision to enthrone his brother, al-Malik al-Ṣāliḥ. His mother was Ṣāliḥa, daughter of Amīr al-Umara Tankiz, who had long served as viceroy of Syria, and the new sultan was fourteen years old. The amirs gathered to swear allegiance; the drums of good tidings were beaten and the city was festooned in the usual manner.

It was also reported that al-Malik al-Nāṣir Ḥasan had been strangled. The amirs who had been stationed in Alexandria—such as Shaykhūn, Manjak, and others—returned, and they summoned Baybughā, bringing him from al-Karak where he had been imprisoned since his return from the ḥajj. Once back in Egypt, he interceded for the ruler of Yemen, al-Malik al-Mujāhid, who had likewise been detained in al-Karak; he was released and journeyed back to the Ḥijāz.

As for the amirs who had remained on the Sultan’s side when his opponent, the Amīr Ākhur (2) and Mankulī Bughā al-Fakhrī (3) and others were seized, they were placed under guard and sent to Alexandria. The Friday khuṭba in the Great Mosque of Damascus was delivered in the name of al-Malik al-Ṣāliḥ on Friday, the seventeenth of Rajab; the viceroy, the amirs, and the judges attended and offered supplication for him in the royal gallery, as was customary.

In the last ten days of Rajab, the deputy of the Sultanate, Sayf al-Dīn Aytamush, was dismissed from Damascus and summoned to Egypt; he set out on Thursday.
