Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

and spirits were stilled; his fire was extinguished, its sparks died away, his thirst for vengeance ran dry, and his course became manifest. He turned back in repentance and desisted, yearning only for safety and deliverance; he was humbled when there was no longer any avenue of escape. He sent his sword to the Sultan, and then hastened in person, by courier post, to the court of al-Malik al-Nāṣir. We ask Allah Most High to treat him kindly and to incline the Sultan’s heart toward him (1).

On Sunday, the fifth of Ṣafar, Amīr Sayf al-Dīn Arghūn al-Kāmilī arrived from Egypt, reinstated as deputy-governor of Aleppo. Accompanying him was Amīr Sayf al-Dīn Tashbughā, dawādār of Egypt and son-in-law of the Syrian viceroy. The viceroy of Syria and the leading amirs went out to receive them. Tashbughā lodged with his wife in the Dār Manjā, in the quarter of the Mosque of al-Qaṣab—a house formerly known as the Dār of Ḥunayn ibn Handar, which had been refurbished the previous year—and on the second night after their arrival the two of them set off for Aleppo.

On Wednesday, the fourteenth of Rabīʿ al-Awwal, the three judges met and summoned the Hanbalī judge to confer with him about the Dār al-Muʿtamid adjoining the madrasa of Shaykh Abū ʿUmar. He had ruled that its endowment be annulled, its gate demolished, and that it be annexed to the aforementioned Dār al-Qurʾān. A royal rescript from the Sultan arrived concurring with that verdict. The Shāfiʿī judge had wished to prevent its implementation, but when the Sultan’s decree came they gathered for the matter. The Hanbalī judge, however, did not attend, saying he would wait for the arrival of the deputy of the Sultanate.

On Thursday, the fifteenth of Rabīʿ al-Awwal, Qāḍī Ḥusayn (2)—son of the Chief Justice Taqī al-Dīn al-Subkī—took his father’s place as shaykh of the Ashrafiyyah Dār al-Ḥadīth. A collection that one of the hadith scholars had prepared for him was read aloud. Rumor spread through the city that his father had resigned the post in his favor, and people discussed the matter at length. Some even claimed that he had likewise ceded to him the Ghazāliyya and the ʿĀdiliyya and appointed him his successor there; Allah knows best.

In the pre-dawn hours of Thursday, the fifth of Jumādā al-Ākhirah, a great fire erupted in the Jawwāniyyīn quarter of the Grand Market. It consumed the shops of the fawākhira (potters) and the manājiliyīn (smiths), the Farjat al-Gharābīl, and Darb al-Qalā, then spread to the vicinity of Darb al-ʿAmīd. That whole district was leveled and left desolate—indeed, to Allah we belong and to Him we shall return. The deputy of the Sultanate arrived after the call to prayer and ordered the fire to be extinguished. The mutawallī, the Shāfiʿī judge, and the chamberlains also came, and the people set to work putting out the flames. Had they left it unchecked, it would have devoured far more. According to what has reached us, no lives were lost, but a vast amount of merchandise, furniture, real estate, and other property was destroyed. Assets belonging to the congregational mosque alone that perished in the blaze were valued at one hundred thousand dirhams. And Allah knows best.
