The shaykh, imām, and scholar Shihāb al-Dīn Aḥmad ibn al-Burhān, the leading Ḥanafī authority in Aleppo, composed a commentary on al-Jāmiʿ al-Kabīr. He was a righteous man who kept to himself, yet the people derived much benefit from him. He passed away on the night of Friday, the twenty-eighth of Rajab. He was versed in the Qur’an, its variant readings, and Arabic, and shared in a number of other sciences as well. May Allah have mercy on him.
Chief Judge Shihāb al-Dīn Muḥammad ibn al-Majd ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Ḥusayn ibn ʿAlī al-Zirzārī, originally from Irbil and later a Damascene Shāfiʿī, served as the Shāfiʿī judge of Damascus. Born in 662 AH, he studied diligently, excelled, and issued formal legal opinions in 693. He taught at the Iqbāliyya, then at the Zawāḥiyya and the tomb-complex of Umm al-Ṣāliḥ; he was appointed superintendent of the public treasury, and afterwards became Chief Judge of Syria. He died at the ʿĀdiliyya Madrasa on the first of Jumādā al-Ūlā and was buried in the Bāb al-Ṣaghīr cemetery. May Allah have mercy on him.
The shaykh, imām, and scholar Ibn al-Murraḥḥal—Zayn al-Dīn Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn the shaykh Zayn al-Dīn ʿUmar ibn Makkī ibn ʿAbd al-Ṣamad ibn al-Murraḥḥal—was lecturer at the Shāmiyya al-Barrāniyya and the ʿAdrawiyya madrasas in Damascus, having previously taught at the Mashhad al-Ḥusayn. Born in Damascus, he was outstanding in learning: a jurist, an expert in legal theory, and a capable debater, handsome in appearance, pleasant-mannered, an excellent teacher, devout and upright. He once deputised in Damascus for ʿIlm al-Dīn al-Akhnāʾī, and his tenure was praised. He died on the night of Wednesday, the nineteenth of Rajab; the following day he was interred near the Masjid al-Dhubbān in the family plot there. Judge Jalāl al-Dīn, who had arrived from Egypt only two days earlier, attended his funeral. Five days later Judge Burhān al-Dīn ibn ʿAbd al-Ḥaqq reached Damascus with his family and children. After Ibn al-Murraḥḥal’s death, Chief Judge Jamāl al-Dīn ibn Jumlata assumed the teaching post at the Shāmiyya al-Barrāniyya, but he himself died a few months thereafter, on Thursday, the fourteenth of Dhū al-Qaʿdah. This biography appears in the chronicle of Shaykh ʿAlam al-Dīn al-Barzalī.
