Also in Ramadan, ʿAlāʾ al-Dīn ʿAlī, son of Judge Muḥyī al-Dīn ibn Faḍl Allāh, assumed the office of kātib al-sirr (chancellor of the secretariat) in Egypt following his father’s death—his biography will be given below. Robes of honor were bestowed upon him and upon his brother Badr al-Dīn, and both were instructed to attend the sultan’s council, while their brother Shihāb al-Dīn set out for the ḥajj.
That same month, hailstones the size of eggs and pomegranates fell on the western side of Egypt, destroying a great deal. Al-Barzalī records the incident, citing it from the work of al-Shihāb al-Dimyāṭī.
On the twenty-third of Ramadan, Shihāb al-Dīn al-ʿAsjadī delivered a hadith lesson beneath the Manṣūriyyah Dome as shaykh al-ḥadīth, replacing Zayn al-Dīn al-Kattānī, who had died. He first related, with its full chain, a hadith from the Musnad of al-Shāfiʿī as he had received it from al-Jāwlī; he then turned aside from it, adducing as his proof Shaykh Athīr al-Dīn Abū Ḥayyān, and recited a hadith from his own teacher Ibn al-Zubayr. He prayed for the sultan, and the judges and dignitaries were present—an exceptionally well-attended gathering.
In Dhu al-Qaʿdah, Chief Judge Shams al-Dīn ibn al-Naqīb attended the teaching session at the Shāmiyyah al-Barrāniyyah madrasa in place of Judge Jamāl al-Dīn ibn Jumlata, who had died. A large assembly of jurists and notables was present (1), and the session was crowded.
On the second of Dhu al-Ḥijjah, Taj al-Dīn ʿAbd al-Raḥīm, son of Chief Judge Jalāl al-Dīn al-Qazwīnī, taught at the smaller ʿĀdiliyyah in lieu of Shaykh Shams al-Dīn ibn al-Naqīb by virtue of the latter’s appointment at the Shāmiyyah al-Barrāniyyah; the judges and dignitaries were in attendance (2).
During that same month, Judge Ṣadr al-Dīn, another son of Jalāl al-Dīn, lectured at the Atābakiyyah, and their brother (3), the preacher Badr al-Dīn, taught at the Ghazāliyya and the ʿAdiliyya on their father’s behalf. That concludes the account, and Allah knows best.
Among the notable deaths recorded this year:
• The great amir Badr al-Dīn Muḥammad (4) ibn Fakhr al-Dīn ʿĪsā ibn al-Turkumānī, builder of the Miqyās Mosque (5) in Egypt during his vizierate there. He was later dismissed from that post (6) and assigned as amir to Syria; afterward he returned to Egypt, where he died on the fifth of Rabīʿ al-Ākhir at al-Ḥusaynīyah. He was well-regarded.
