particularly in the scenes of the Day of Judgment, which culminate in the final destination—either the Garden, with its endearing, God-bestowed qualities, or the Fire, with its terrifying, divinely decreed punishments.
Ibn Kathīr alludes to this final section in his introduction, saying:
“We shall mention the tribulations and epic battles, the portents of the Hour, then the resurrection and rising, and the terrors of the Day of Judgment, together with a description of that Day, what it contains, and the momentous events that will occur therein; then the attributes of Hellfire, followed by the attributes of the Gardens and the fine and beautiful bounties they contain, and whatever else is related to this. We shall cite what the Book and the Sunnah convey, along with the transmitted and accepted reports of the scholars—the heirs of the prophets—who draw from the lamp of the chosen Muḥammadan Prophethood; upon the one who brought it be the most excellent blessings and peace.”(1)
