In Jumādā al-Ākhira the lands of Egypt and Syria were festively decorated and the drums of glad tidings were beaten to celebrate the sultan’s recovery from a fall (1) that had fractured his hand. Robes of honor were bestowed upon the emirs and physicians in Cairo, and the detainees were released (2).
In the same month envoys from the Franks arrived before the sultan, asking for certain coastal territories. He said to them, “Were it not that messengers are not to be killed, I would have killed you,” and then sent them back to their lands in disgrace.
On Sunday, the sixth of Rajab, the lesson endowed by Qāḍī Fakhr al-Dīn, the Mamluk secretary, for the Ḥanafīs at their miḥrāb in the Umayyad Mosque of Damascus was convened. Shaykh Shihāb al-Dīn Ibn Qāḍī al-Ḥiṣn (3)—brother of the chief judge Burhān al-Dīn ibn ʿAbd al-Ḥaqq (4) in Egypt—taught on that occasion. The judges and leading dignitaries attended, after which they went from him to his nephew Ṣalāḥ al-Dīn at the Jawhariyya (5), where he delivered a lesson in place of Shams al-Dīn ibn al-Zakī, who had relinquished it to him (6).
At the end of Rajab the first Friday sermon was delivered in the mosque built by Emir Sayf al-Dīn Ulmās (7) al-Ḥājib, outside Cairo in the al-Shāriʿ quarter (8).
A sermon was likewise delivered in the mosque erected by Qawṣūn, located between the Mosque of Ṭūlūn and al-Ṣāliḥiyya (9), on Friday, the eleventh of Ramaḍān, with the sultan and the foremost emirs in attendance. That day the sermon was read by the chief judge Jalāl al-Dīn al-Qazwīnī al-Shāfiʿī—in place of Amīn al-Dīn ibn al-ʿAssāl, who returned to the custodianship of the Great Dīwān (10). A splendid robe of honor was conferred upon him, and Badr al-Dīn ibn Shakar (11) was appointed the sole khāṭib.
The Syrian ḥajj caravan set out on Saturday, the eleventh of Shawwāl, under the command of Sayf al-Dīn al-Mawsāwī (12), the son-in-law of Balabān.
