He passed away on the night of Wednesday, the twenty-fourth of Shawwal, having surpassed ninety years of age, and was buried in his own house, which he had endowed for a shaykh and ten boys to listen to and memorize the Quran, assigning to it all his property. May Allah accept it from him and grant him mercy. After him the teaching post at the Mustanṣiriyyah was taken up by the Chief Judge Qutb al-Din.
The righteous shaykh, learned scholar and benevolent merchant—Shams al-Din Muḥammad (1) ibn Dāwud ibn Muḥammad ibn Yasab (2) al-Salamī al-Baghdādī—was a man of considerable means who showed complete kindness to the people of knowledge, especially the companions of Shaykh Taqī al-Din (3). He endowed many books and performed Hajj several times. He died on the night of Friday (4), the twenty-fourth of Dhū al-Qaʿdah, four days after the death of Shaykh Taqī al-Din. The funeral prayer was held for him after the Friday prayer, and he was buried at Bāb al-Ṣaghīr; may Allah have mercy on him and honor his resting place.
On that same night the mother Maryam (5), daughter of Faraj ibn Mufarrij ʿAlī—from the village where my father had served as preacher, namely Mujaydal al-Qaryah, in the year 673 AH—also passed away. The funeral prayer for her was held after the Friday prayer, and she was laid to rest in the Ṣūfiyyah cemetery to the east of the grave of Shaykh Taqī al-Din Ibn Taymiyyah. May Allah, Exalted is He, have mercy on them both.
[Then came the year 729 AH.]
It opened with the caliph and the officials remaining in the posts they had held the year before, except that Qutb al-Din, the son of Shaykh al-Salamiyyah, took sole charge (6) of oversight of the army (7).
In Muḥarram, the judge Muḥyī al-Din ibn Faḍl Allah, the state secretary (kātib al-sirr) in Damascus, together with his son al-Ṣadr (8) Shihāb al-Din and with Sharaf al-Din ibn Shams al-Din ibn al-Shihāb Maḥmūd, were summoned by express courier to Egypt. There the senior official, the aforementioned Muḥyī al-Din, assumed the office of state secretary in place of ʿAlāʾ al-Din ibn al-Athīr, who had fallen ill, and his son Shihāb al-Din remained with him. Sharaf al-Din ibn (9) al-Shihāb Maḥmūd returned to Damascus to occupy the secretaryship in place of Ibn Faḍl Allah (10).
