The long-lived elder, Shaykh Jamāl al-Dīn (1) ʿUmar ibn Ilyās ibn al-Rashīd al-Baʿalbaki, a merchant, was born in 602 AH (2) and died on the twelfth of Jumada al-Ula at the age of one hundred and twenty (3). He was buried at Musattaḥa (4). May Allah have mercy on him.
The shaykh, imam, hadith master, and accomplished linguist, Ṣafī al-Dīn Abū al-Thanāʾ Maḥmūd ibn Abī Bakr Muḥammad (5) ibn Ḥāmid ibn Yaḥyā ibn al-Ḥusayn al-Urmawī (6), the Sufi (7), was born in 646 AH. He heard a vast number of hadiths, travelled in search of knowledge, and wrote prolifically, producing among other works an appendix to Ibn al-Athīr’s lexicon al-Nihāyah. After reading al-Tanbīh he turned to linguistic studies and gained a solid command of the field. In 677 AH his mind became disturbed and melancholia overtook him; at times he would recover and engage in lucid discussion, only for the illness to return. He remained in that state until he died in Jumada al-Akhirah of this year in the Nūrī maristan (hospital) and was buried at Bāb al-Ṣaghīr.
The honoured and protected lady, Khātūn (8), daughter of King al-Ṣāliḥ Ismāʿīl ibn al-ʿĀdil ibn Abū Bakr ibn Ayyūb ibn Shādhī, passed away in her residence, known as Dār Kāfūr. She was a respected princess who never married, and at this time no other woman of the Ayyubid line held her rank. She died on Thursday, the twenty-first of Shaʿbān, and was buried in the cemetery of Umm al-Ṣāliḥ. May Allah have mercy on her.
