Then the year 723 AH began. Its first day fell on a Sunday in Kanun al-Aṣamm (January), and the officials were the same as those already mentioned for the previous year, except that the Governor of the Outskirts in Damascus was Emir ʿAlāʾ al-Dīn ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥasan al-Marwānī (1), who had entered upon that office in Ṣafar of the preceding year.
In Ṣafar of this year Emir Shihāb al-Dīn ibn Barq (2) assumed the governorship of Madinah, replacing Ṣārim al-Dīn al-Jawkundārī.
Also in Ṣafar, Judge Karīm al-Dīn, the sultan’s wakīl, recovered from an illness that had befallen him. Cairo was decorated, candles were lit, and the poor were gathered at the Manṣūrī hospital to partake of his charity; some of them, however, died in the crush (3).
On the last day of Rabīʿ al-Awwal, the eminent imam, hadith authority, and Shāfiʿī jurist Taqī al-Dīn al-Shubkī delivered the lesson at the Manṣūriyyah in Cairo in place of Qāḍī Jamāl al-Dīn al-Zarʿī, who had moved to Damascus. ʿAlāʾ al-Dīn, Shaykh al-Shuyūkh al-Qūnawī al-Shāfiʿī, attended the session, and afterward Shams al-Dīn Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad ibn ʿAdlān taught at the Ḥākim Mosque in the ʿIzzīyah quarter.
The appointment (4) of Qāḍī Jamāl al-Dīn al-Zarʿī to the judiciary of Syria, in place of al-Najm ibn Ṣaṣrā, took place on Friday, the fourth of Jumādā al-Ūlā. He settled in the ʿAdilīyah, having already been granted the posts of Chief Judge, Shaykh al-Shuyūkh, Military Judge, and the professorial chairs of the ʿAdilīyah, Ghazālīyah, and Atābakīyah madrasahs (5).
On Sunday (6) Judge Karīm al-Dīn (7) ʿAbd al-Karīm ibn Hibat Allah ibn al-Sadīd, the sultan’s wakīl, was arrested. He had enjoyed with the sultan a rank and favour surpassing that of any of the great viziers. His wealth and possessions were impounded, and he was placed under guard by the deputy sultan. He was then ordered to remain in his mausoleum in the Qarāfah cemetery, after which he was exiled to al-Shawbak (8) and granted a small allowance. Later he was permitted to reside in the Holy Jerusalem in the ribāṭ he had established.
