On Saturday, the twenty-ninth of that same month, the Maliki qadi arrived in Syria from Egypt. He was the eminent imam and scholar Fakhr al-Din Abu al-ʿAbbas Ahmad ibn Salama ibn (1) Ahmad ibn Salama al-Iskandari al-Maliki, appointed to the judgeship of Damascus in place of the chief qadi Jamal al-Din al-Zawwawi, whose strength had failed and whose illness had become severe. The judges and leading citizens went out to receive him, and his letter of appointment was read aloud in the Great Mosque on the day after his arrival; it was dated the twelfth of the month. His deputy, the jurist Nur al-Din al-Sakhawi, also reached Damascus and delivered a lesson in the mosque at the opening (2) of Jumada al-Awwal. The notables attended, and his virtues, learning, integrity, firmness, and piety were all praised. Nine days later the deposed al-Zawwawi died; he had exercised the judiciary in Damascus for thirty years.
That same year the amir Sayf al-Din Bahādurʾāṣ was released from the prison of al-Karak, taken to Cairo, and honoured by the sultan. His imprisonment there had been in compliance with the request of the governor of Syria because of an incident that had occurred between them in Malatya.
The mahmal set out on Thursday, 9 Shawwal, with Sayf al-Din Kujkun (3) al-Mansuri as amir of the Hajj.
Among those who made the pilgrimage (4) were the chief qadi Najm al-Din ibn Ṣaṣrā together with his nephew Sharaf al-Din, Kamal al-Din ibn al-Shirazi, Qadi Jalal al-Din al-Hanafi, Shaykh Sharaf al-Din ibn Taymiyya, and many others.
On the sixth of this month Qadi Fiʾl-Din (6) Muhammad, son of Shaykh Kamal al-Din ibn al-Shurayshi, lectured in the Jarukhiyya (5) after the death of Shaykh Sharaf al-Din ibn Salam (7); the notables were present.
On the nineteenth of the month Ibn al-Zamlakani taught in the ʿAdrawiyya in place of Ibn Salam.
During the same period Shaykh Sharaf al-Din ibn Taymiyya lectured in the Hanbaliyya (8) with his brother’s permission after the death of their maternal brother Badr al-Din Qasim ibn Muhammad ibn Khalid. Shaykh Taqi al-Din himself attended the lesson, and large numbers of dignitaries and others were present both before his brother’s departure for the Hajj and after his return.
News reached Damascus that wine and every form of immorality had been abolished throughout the coastal regions, Tripoli, and elsewhere; many taxes had likewise been removed from the people there, and in every village of the Nusayriyya district a mosque had been built. Praise and gratitude belong to Allah for these blessings.
