Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

and attended the ceremonial procession and had the banquet spread. There, in the presence of the amirs, he was put in irons and sent by express courier to al-Karak, accompanied by Gurlu al-ʿAdalī and Baybars al-Majnūn (1).

ʿIzz al-Dīn Ibn al-Qalansī was released from confinement in the Dār al-Saʿāda. He performed the noon prayer in the congregational mosque, then returned to his house, where candles had been lit for him and the people offered supplications on his behalf. He afterwards went to the Ashrafiyya House of Hadith and remained there for about twenty days, until Amīr Jamāl al-Dīn, the deputy of al-Karak, arrived.

During this same month the deputy of Ṣafad (2) seized Amīr Sayf al-Dīn Qutlūbak, chained him, and dispatched him to al-Karak. The deputy of Egypt likewise arrested Amīr Sayf al-Dīn Baktemur, the amir khāzindār, and replaced him with Amīr Rukn al-Dīn (3) Baybars, the Mansurī dawādār.

The deputy of Gaza was also apprehended and succeeded by al-Jāwulī (4). Thus the prison of al-Karak now held Asandamur, deputy of Aleppo; Baktemur, deputy of Egypt; Karāy, deputy of Damascus; Qutlūbak, deputy of Ṣafad; Qulṭitamur (5), deputy of Gaza; and Bathkhas (6).

Jamāl al-Dīn Āqūsh al-Manṣūrī, formerly deputy of al-Karak, arrived to assume the deputyship of Damascus on Wednesday, the fourteenth of Rabīʿ al-Ākhir. The populace went out to greet him, candles were lit in his honor, and al-Khiṭrī (7) accompanied him to install him in office. He had governed al-Karak from 690 AH to 709 AH and had left commendable works there. ʿIzz al-Dīn Ibn al-Qalansī also went out to welcome the new deputy.

On Friday the sultan’s decree was read from the royal platform in the presence of the deputy, the judges, and the notables. It enjoined benevolence toward the subjects and the cancellation of the arrears imposed during Karāy’s tenure. Prayers for the sultan multiplied, and the people rejoiced.

On Monday the nineteenth a robe of honor for the deputyship of Ṣafad was bestowed upon Amīr Sayf al-Dīn Bahādur Āṣ (8); he kissed the threshold and departed for his post on Tuesday.

On the same day Ṣadr Badr al-Dīn Ibn Abī al-Fawāris donned the robe of office as supervisor of the dīwāns in Damascus, sharing the position with al-Sharīf Ibn ʿAdnān.

(1) al-Durar al-Kāmina (vol. 3, p. 267) and Bada’i‘ al-Zuhur (vol. 1, p. 440). His arrest took place on the 23rd of Jumada al-Ūlā. Ghirlu was the deputy of Damascus under Kutbugha, as will be noted in the obituaries for 719 AH. (2) In the printed edition it reads “Safat,” which is a misreading, since Ṣafat is a village in the interior of Egypt near Bilbays—said by Yāqūt to be where the cow ordered to be slaughtered by the Children of Israel was sold. The reading we have adopted is more plausible. (3) The phrase in the edition is confused, reading “the emir Saif al-Dīn Biktemir” and then “in al-Karak, Baybars al-Dawādār al-Manṣūrī,” where an entire line has been omitted. Our text agrees with al-Nujūm al-Zāhira (vol. 9, p. 30) and Bada’i‘ al-Zuhur (vol. 1, p. 440). (4) He is ʿIlm al-Dīn Sanjar al-Jāwli, who will appear in the obituaries for 745 AH. (5) In the edition it appears as quṭaltumz with zāy, which is a corruption. (6) In the edition it reads banḥāṣ, whereas al-Durar al-Kāmina (vol. 1, p. 472) and al-Nujūm al-Zāhira (vol. 9, p. 25) agree with our text. He died with Asandamar in prison in 711 AH. (7) He is the emir Aydamur al-Khaṭīrī. (8) In place of quṭlūbik. He will be mentioned in the obituaries for 730 AH.
