At the beginning of Dhu al-Hijjah, Shaykh Taqi al-Din Ibn Taymiyya rode out with a group of his companions toward Mount al-Jurd and the Kasrawanis (1), accompanied by the Naqib al-Ashraf Zayn al-Din ibn ʿAdnan (2). They summoned many of them to repent, obliged them to observe the ordinances of Islam, and he returned upheld and victorious.
[Among the notable personages who died during the year]
• Shaykh Taj al-Din ibn Shams al-Din ibn al-Rifaʿi: for many years he had been the shaykh of the Ahmadiyya at Umm ʿUbayda (3), and dervish licences (ijazas) were issued on his authority. He was buried there beside his forebears in the Batiha marshes.
• al-Ṣadr Najm al-Din ʿUmar (4), son of Abu al-Qasim ibn ʿAbd al-Munʿim ibn Muhammad ibn al-Hasan ibn Abi al-Kutayyib ibn Muhammad ibn Abi al-Tayyib, agent of the bayt al-mal and overseer of the Treasury. At one point he also supervised the Nuri Hospital (5) and other institutions. He enjoyed a commendable reputation and was an upright man; he had heard hadith and transmitted them as well. He died on Tuesday night, the fifteenth of Jumada al-Akhira, and was buried in the family plot at Bab al-Saghir (6).
[Then the year 705 began]
The year opened with the caliph al-Mustakfi and the sultan al-Malik al-Nasir still in office, and the officials were the same as those mentioned earlier (7).
News arrived that a band of Tatars had ambushed the Aleppo army, killing a number of its leading men and others besides, and loud lamentation spread through the lands of Aleppo because of it.
At the beginning of Muharram, Jalal al-Din al-Qazwini (8), brother of the chief qadi Imam al-Din, issued judgments in place of Ibn Sasra.
On the second [of Muharram] the deputy of the sultanate set out with the remaining Syrian troops. A detachment had already preceded him together with Ibn Taymiyya on the second of Muharram; they marched to the territories of al-Jurd, al-Ruffad, and al-Tiyamina. Thereupon the deputy of the sultanate, al-Afram, departed.
