A report is related from ʿĀʾishah (1), attributed to the Prophet, which states that he will be buried alongside the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, Abū Bakr, and ʿUmar in the Prophetic Chamber; however, its chain of transmission is not sound.
Abū ʿĪsā al-Tirmidhī (2) said: “Zayd ibn Akhzam al-Ṭāʾī narrated to us; Abū Qutaybah Salm (3) ibn Qutaybah narrated to us; Abū Mawdūd al-Madanī narrated to me; ʿUthmān ibn al-Ḍaḥḥāk narrated to us from Muḥammad ibn Yūsuf ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Salām, from his father, from his grandfather, who said: ‘It is written in the Torah the description of Muḥammad, and that Jesus son of Mary, peace be upon him, will be buried with him.’”
Abū Mawdūd added, “There remains within the house space for a grave.”
Al-Tirmidhī then remarked, “This ḥadith is ḥasan.” (4) Such were his words, though the correct form of the narrator’s name is al-Ḍaḥḥāk ibn ʿUthmān al-Madanī.
Al-Bukhārī commented: “In my view this ḥadith is not sound, and it has no corroborating transmission.”
Al-Bukhārī (5) also narrated—from Yaḥyā ibn Ḥammād, from Abū ʿAwānah, from ʿĀṣim al-Aḥwal, from Abū ʿUthmān al-Nahdī, from Salmān—that “the interval between Jesus and Muḥammad ﷺ was six hundred years.”
Qatādah put it at five hundred and sixty years (6).
Others have said five hundred and forty years (7).
Al-Ḍaḥḥāk placed it at four hundred and some thirty-odd years (8).
The figure most commonly cited is six hundred years (9); some, however, say six hundred and twenty lunar years, which equals six hundred solar years. Allah knows best.
Ibn Ḥibbān stated in his Ṣaḥīḥ (10), under the heading “The length of time during which the community of Jesus remained upon his guidance”: Abū Yaʿlā narrated to us; Abū Hammām narrated to us; al-Walīd ibn Muslim narrated to us; from al-Haytham ibn Ḥumayd; from al-Waḍīn ibn ʿAṭāʾ; from Naṣr ibn ʿAlqamah; from Jubayr ibn Nufayr; from Abū al-Dardāʾ, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Indeed Allah took David…”
