In Ṣafar, Shaykh Kamal al-Din ibn al-Shurayshi (1) assumed the supervision of the Umayyad Mosque. A robe of investiture was conferred upon him; he discharged the office commendably, treated everyone with fairness, and resigned from it in Rajab of that same year.
During the same month of Ṣafar, Shaykh Shams al-Din al-Dhahabi (2) was appointed preacher of Kafr Batna (3), where he took up residence.
When Shaykh Zayn al-Din al-Fariqi died later that year (4)—as will be mentioned in the obituaries—the deputy of the sultanate for the district of al-Balqaʾ (5) was conducting an investigation into certain matters. When he arrived, they spoke with him about al-Fariqi’s posts. He assigned the pulpit to Sharaf al-Din al-Fazari (6) and granted al-Shamiyya al-Barraniyya and the Dar al-Hadith (7) to Shaykh Kamal al-Din ibn al-Shurayshi (8), acting on the recommendation of Shaykh Taqi al-Din Ibn Taymiyya. From those endowments he withdrew the Nasiriyya (9) and bestowed it upon Shaykh Kamal al-Din ibn al-Zamlakani, issuing written decrees to that effect. Shaykh Sharaf al-Din then undertook the imamate and the preaching, and the people rejoiced in him because of his excellent recitation, pleasant voice, and upright conduct.
On the morning of Monday, the twenty-second of Rabiʿ al-Awwal, the courier arrived from Egypt in the company of Shaykh Sadr al-Din ibn al-Wakil (10). A royal decree had preceded him, granting him all of al-Fariqi’s appointments in addition to the teaching post he already held. He met with the deputy of the sultanate in the Citadel and then went to the Great Mosque, where the door of the Dar al-Khitaba was opened for him. He took up residence there, and people came to congratulate him; the Qur’an reciters and the callers to prayer attended him. He led the congregation in the ʿasr prayer and served as imam for two days, but the public showed distress over his prayer and sermon. They complained to the deputy of the sultanate, who forbade him to preach while confirming him in the teaching chair and the Dar al-Hadith, duties he continued to perform (11). A further sultanic decree arrived appointing Shaykh Sharaf al-Din al-Fazari to the pulpit, and he preached on Friday.
