Shaykh Zayn al-Dīn al-Fāriqī had been lecturing at the Nāṣiriyyah school during the absence of its teacher, Kamāl al-Dīn ibn al-Sharīshī, who had fled to al-Karak; the latter returned to his chair in Ramadan.
Toward the end of that month Ibn al-Zakī taught at the Dulʿiyyah in place of Jamāl al-Dīn al-Zarʿī, owing to his absence.
On Monday the stipulations of the shurūṭ al-dhimmah were read aloud to the ahl al-dhimmah, they were required to abide by them, and it was unanimously agreed to remove them from public offices and to subject them to the prescribed ṣighār. A proclamation was issued throughout the city: Christians were to wear blue turbans, Jews yellow, and Samaritans red. Much good resulted from this, and they were clearly distinguished from the Muslims.
On the tenth of Ramadan a decree arrived ordering that Arjwāsh and Emir Sayf al-Dīn Aqbjā share the citadel viceroyalty, each to ride in procession one day while the other remained in the fortress the next. Arjwāsh refused to comply.
In Shawwāl Shaykh Shihāb al-Dīn ibn al-Majd taught at the Iqbāliyya in place of ʿAlāʾ al-Dīn al-Qūnawī (1), as the latter was residing in Cairo.
On Friday, the thirteenth (2) of Dhū al-Qaʿdah, Shams al-Dīn ibn al-Ḥarīrī was removed from the Ḥanafī judgeship and replaced by Qāḍī Jalāl al-Dīn ibn Ḥusām al-Dīn, who was reinstated to the bench he and his father had previously held. The decision was reached jointly by Vizier Shams al-Dīn Sunqur al-Aʿsar and the viceroy al-Afram.
In the same year the envoys of the Tatar king arrived in Damascus; they were lodged in the Citadel and then continued on to Egypt.
Among the notable deaths in that year:
– Shaykh Ḥasan al-Kurdī (3). He lived in al-Shāghūr on an orchard of his own, subsisting on its yield and feeding all who came to him, and people used to visit him. When death approached he performed a full bath, trimmed his hair, faced the qiblah, and prayed several cycles (4). He then passed away (may Allah have mercy on him) on Monday, the fourth of Jumādā al-Ūlā, having surpassed one hundred years of age.
– The eunuch Ṣafī al-Dīn Jawhar al-Tiflisī (5), the hadith scholar.
