Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

Chief Judge of Egypt for the Ḥanafīs (1), succeeding Shams al-Dīn al-Sarūjī. His son remained in Damascus as Chief Judge (2) of the Ḥanafīs; he lectured at his father’s two colleges—the Khātūniyyah and the Muqaddamiyyah—and abandoned the Qassāʿiyyīn and Shibliyyah schools. A dispatch rider (3) then arrived with news that the sultan had recovered from the mishap he had suffered, whereupon the drums of rejoicing were beaten and the city was festooned with decorations: the sultan had fallen from his horse (4) while playing polo.

It was just as the poet said:

[Basīt]
You unite strength and generosity and learning—
Yet no single steed can bear all that!

That same courier (5) also brought the investiture writ and a robe of honor for the viceroy of the sultanate; the decree (6) was read aloud, he kissed the threshold, and the day was truly formidable.

In Rabīʿ al-Awwal, ʿIzz al-Dīn, the son of Chief Judge Taqī al-Dīn Sulaymān, delivered a lecture at the Jawziyyah College. Present with him were Imām al-Dīn al-Shāfiʿī, his brother Jalāl al-Dīn, and a number of scholars. After the lesson he sat and issued judgments on his father’s behalf, with his permission.

Also in Rabīʿ al-Awwal (7) Chief Judge Taqī al-Dīn Ibn Daqīq al-ʿĪd became angry and suspended judgment in Egypt for several days (8); he was then appeased and returned, on the condition that he would not appoint his son al-Muḥibb as his deputy.

On Friday, the tenth of Rabīʿ al-Ākhir, the Friday prayer was established at the Muʿaẓẓamiyyah College, and its instructor, the Ḥanafī judge Shams al-Dīn Ibn al-ʿIzz (9), delivered the sermon.

Around this time word spread of the arrest of Badr al-Dīn Baysarī (10); his assets in Egypt were placed under sequestration. The sultan dispatched a detachment under ʿAlam al-Dīn al-Dawādārī (11) to Tall Ḥamdūn, which he captured (12)—praise be to Allah for His favor. The news reached Damascus on the twelfth (13) of Ramaḍān (14); the village of al-Khalīliyyah was destroyed (15) in the process, and the noon adhān was proclaimed there, and it was
