On the morning of that day Judge Shams al-Dīn ibn al-Ḥarīrī lectured in the Qīmāziyyah in place of Shihāb al-Dīn al-Naḥḥās (1) by mutual agreement, and a number of people attended. Later the sultan led the next Friday prayer in the royal enclosure, accompanied by his vizier Ibn al-Khalīlī, who was weakened by an illness that had befallen him.
On the seventeenth of Muḥarram an order was issued for al-Malik al-Kāmil, son of al-Malik al-Saʿīd, son of al-Ṣāliḥ Ismāʿīl ibn al-ʿĀdil, granting him a tablkhānah and permission to wear the sharbūsh. He entered the Citadel and the kettledrums (2) were beaten for him at its gate. Then, on the morning of Tuesday, the twenty-second of Muḥarram, Sultan al-ʿĀdil Kitbugha (3) departed Damascus with the army. The vizier set out after him, passed by the Dār al-Ḥadīth, visited the Prophetic Relic, and there Shaykh Zayn al-Dīn al-Fāriqī came out to him and spoke directly with him about the professorship of the Nāsiriyyah. Zayn al-Dīn resigned from his post at the Shāmiyyah Barrāniyyah, which was then assigned to Judge Kamāl al-Dīn ibn al-Sharīshī. It was reported that the vizier gave the shaykh some trifling portion of this world’s goods, which he accepted; he likewise gave a gift to the custodian of the relic—Muʿīn Khiṭāb. The notables and the judges (4) accompanied the vizier outside the city to bid him farewell.
That day a welcome rain fell, from which the people sought healing; it washed away the filth and other traces left by the troops.
Al-Taqī Tubah returned from the vizier’s farewell, having been entrusted with oversight of the treasury, while Shihāb al-Dīn al-Naḥḥās was removed from that office.
On Wednesday, the last day of Muḥarram, Shaykh Nāṣir al-Dīn lectured in the Nāsiriyyah Juwwāniyyah (5) in place of Judge Badr al-Dīn Ibn Jamāʿah.
On that same day people whispered among themselves that disorder had erupted among the troops (6), with strife and confusion. Consequently, the gate of the Citadel that faces the city was shut (7). The ṣāḥib Shihāb al-Dīn entered through the Khawkhah Gate (8); the deputy and the emirs prepared themselves, and a detachment of the army mounted up and took station at Bāb al-Naṣr (9). Toward the time of the ʿaṣr prayer Sultan al-Malik al-ʿĀdil Kitbugha reached the Citadel (10) accompanied by only five or six of his mamluks. He entered the Citadel, and the emirs came in to him.
