In one ḥadīth it is stated:
“The people of Paradise will enter it clean-shaven, beardless, with kohl-darkened eyes, all of them thirty-three years of age.” (1)
Another narration adds: “at the age of Jesus and with the beauty of Joseph.” (2)
Ḥammād ibn Salamah likewise related—through ʿAlī ibn Zayd (3) from Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib—that he said: “Jesus was taken up when he was thirty-three years old.”
As for the report transmitted by al-Ḥākim in his al-Mustadrak and by Yaʿqūb ibn Sufyān al-Fasawī in his Tārīkh (4), from Saʿīd ibn Abī Maryam, from Nāfiʿ, from Yazīd, from ʿUmārah ibn Ghazyah, from Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd-Allāh ibn ʿAmr ibn ʿUthmān, whose mother Fāṭimah bint al-Ḥusayn told him that ʿĀʾishah used to say: “Fāṭimah informed me that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ told her (5) that no prophet was followed by another prophet except that the successor lived half the lifespan of the one before him; and he told me that Jesus son of Mary lived one hundred and twenty years, so I do not expect to live beyond sixty.” This is the wording recorded by al-Fasawī, and it is an unusual (gharīb) report. (6)
Al-Ḥāfiẓ Ibn ʿAsākir commented: “What is sound is that Jesus did not reach that age; rather, the hadith intends the length of his stay among his community.” He cited what Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah narrated from ʿAmr ibn Dīnār, from Yaḥyā ibn Jaʿdah, who said: “Fāṭimah said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me, ‘Jesus son of Mary remained among the Children of Israel for forty years.’” (7) This chain is broken (munqaṭiʿ).
Jarīr and al-Thawrī likewise reported—from al-Aʿmash, from Ibrāhīm—that Jesus stayed among his people for forty years.
It is also reported from the Commander of the Believers ʿAlī that Jesus, peace be upon him, was taken up on the night of the twenty-second of Ramaḍān, and that ʿAlī himself passed away on that same night, five days after he was struck. (8)
Al-Ḍaḥḥāk narrated from Ibn ʿAbbās that when Jesus was raised to heaven, a cloud descended until he sat upon it. Mary came, bade him farewell, and wept; he was then lifted up while she looked on. Jesus handed her his mantle, saying, “This shall be the sign between you and me on the Day of Resurrection,” and he placed his turban upon Simon. His mother continued to bid him farewell, pointing toward him with her finger until
