Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

After him, the teaching position at the Ṣāḥibiyya (1) was assumed by Shaykh Shams al-Dīn Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Qawī al-Mardāwī, while at the Dār al-Ḥadīth al-Ẓāhiriyya it was taken up by Sharaf al-Dīn ʿUmar ibn Khwāja, the imam of the congregational mosque known as al-Nāṣiḥ.

The son of the lord of Hama, al-Malik al-Afḍal (2) Nūr al-Dīn ʿAlī ibn al-Malik al-Muẓaffar Taqī al-Dīn Maḥmūd ibn al-Malik al-Manṣūr Muḥammad ibn al-Malik al-Muẓaffar Taqī al-Dīn ʿUmar ibn Shāhinshāh ibn Ayyūb, passed away in Damascus. The funeral prayer was held for him in its great mosque, after which his bier was carried out through Bāb al-Farādis and taken to his father’s city, where he was laid to rest in the family cemetery. He was the father of the two eminent emirs, Badr al-Dīn Ḥasan and ʿImād al-Dīn Ismāʿīl, the latter of whom later assumed the rule of Hama (3).

Ibn ʿAbd al-Ẓāhir (4)—Muḥyī al-Dīn ʿAbd (5) Allāh ibn Rashīd al-Dīn ʿAbd al-Ẓāhir ibn Nashwān ibn ʿAbd al-Ẓāhir ibn ʿAlī ibn Najdah al-Saʿdī—served as chancery secretary in Egypt and was the last of his generation to excel in that craft, surpassing all his contemporaries. He was the father of al-Ṣāḥib Fath al-Dīn al-Nadīm; notice of his death appeared earlier, before that of his mother (6). He authored several works, including a biography of al-Malik al-Ẓāhir. A man of noble character (7), he produced exquisite poetry and elegant prose. He died (8) on Tuesday, the fourth of Rajab, having passed the age of seventy, and was buried in the mausoleum he had built for himself in the Qarāfah cemetery.

The emir ʿAlam al-Dīn Sanjar al-Ḥalabī (9), who had been Qutuz’s deputy in Damascus—when the pledge of allegiance to al-Ẓāhir reached him, he sought that allegiance for himself (10); accordingly he was proclaimed ruler and adopted the royal title al-Malik al-Mujāhid.
