Shaykh Taj al-Din al-Fazawi (1) ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Ibrahim (2) Sibaʿ ibn Diyaʾ (3), Abu Muhammad al-Fazari, the eminent imam (4), the noted scholar and luminary, and the leading Shafiʿi authority of his age.
He outstripped his contemporaries and seized the palm of precedence, and he is the father of our teacher, the distinguished scholar Burhan al-Din. Shaykh Taj al-Din was born in 630 AH (5). He passed away mid-morning on Monday, the fifth of Jumada al-Akhira, at the Badrāʾiyyah Madrasa. His funeral prayer was held after the noon prayer in the Umayyad Mosque; (6) Chief Judge Shihab al-Din ibn al-Khuwayyi (7) led the prayer. Shaykh Zayn al-Din al-Fāriqi (8) then officiated another funeral prayer for him at the Jarraḥ Mosque, after which he was buried beside his father at Bab (9) al-Saghir, on a day of overwhelming crowds.
Many branches of beneficial knowledge were combined in him (10), together with refined manners (11), eloquent speech, excellence in authorship, lofty aspiration, and penetrating legal insight. His book al-Iqlīd (The Key)—which he compiled (12) in correspondence with the chapters of al-Tanbīh and carried (13) up to the chapter on usurpation—testifies to his sharp understanding, elevated rank, resolute determination, keen perception, and the soundness of his ijtihād in most of what he wrote. People derived great benefit from it. He, along with Muḥyī al-Din (14) al-Nawawī (15), was a teacher of the most senior of our shaykhs. He also produced an abridgment of Ibn al-Jawzī’s al-Mawḍūʿāt (Fabricated Reports), and it is in my possession
