known as Ibn al-Khiyāmī. He took part in many fields of knowledge and had an outstanding command of polished, refined verse. He lived past eighty. He and Najm al-Din ibn Isrāʾīl (1) once contended over a qaṣīda in the bāʾ rhyme (2) and referred the matter to Ibn al-Fāriḍ (3). He instructed each of them to compose a few lines in the same meter; both complied and did well, yet Ibn al-Khiyāmī (4) clearly had the upper hand. Ibn Khallikān (5) did the same, praising him in that meter (6) with graceful verses, and al-Jazarī devoted a lengthy biography to him in his book (7).
In this year there also died (8):
• al-Ḥājj Sharaf (9) ibn Mirā (10), the father of Shaykh Muḥyī al-Din al-Nawawī—may Allah have mercy on him.
• Yaʿqūb ibn ʿAbd al-Ḥaqq (11) Abū (12) Yūsuf al-Marīnī (13), ruler of the Maghrib, who rebelled against al-Wāthiq Billāh Abū Dabūs, deposed him outside Marrakesh, and seized al-Andalus and Algeciras in 668 AH. His reign lasted until Muḥarram of this year, and with it the Almohad dynasty in those lands came to an end.
