ʿAbd al-Razzāq narrated:
Maʿmar informed us, from a man, on the authority of ʿIkrimah, who said:
Jesus ﵇ said, “Do not cast pearls before swine, for the swine can make no use of pearls. Likewise, do not give wisdom to one who does not desire it, for wisdom is better than pearls, and whoever rejects it is worse than the swine (1).”
Wahb and others have reported the same from him.
It is also related that he said to his disciples:
“You are the salt of the earth; if you become corrupt, no remedy remains for you. Among you are two marks of ignorance: laughing without wonder and taking the morning nap without having spent the night in worship (2).”
He was asked, “Who are the people most severely tried?” He answered:
“The slip of a scholar, for when a scholar slips many scholars slip because of him (3).”
He also said:
“O evil scholars! You have placed the world on your heads and the Hereafter beneath your feet. Your words are a cure, yet your deeds are a disease. Your likeness is that of the oleander tree (4): pleasing to the eye, but deadly to the one who eats it (5).”
Wahb reported that Jesus ﵇ said:
“O evil scholars! You sit at the gates of Paradise—neither entering yourselves nor letting the poor enter. The worst people in God’s sight are scholars who seek the world with their knowledge (6).”
Makhḥūl said:
John and Jesus met; Jesus took his hand while smiling. John said, “Cousin, why do I see you smiling as though you feel secure?” Jesus replied, “And why do I see you frowning as though you despair?” God revealed to them: “The one I love most between you is the one who is more cheerful toward his companion (7).”
Wahb ibn Munabbih said:
Jesus ﵇ and his disciples stopped at a grave while its owner was being lowered into it. They began to speak of the grave and its constriction, whereupon he said, “You were in something even narrower—the wombs of your mothers—yet when God wills to widen, He widens (8).”
Abū ʿUmar al-Ḍarīr said:
It has reached me that whenever Jesus ﵇ remembered death, his skin would split and bleed.
There are very many reports of this kind. Al-Ḥāfiẓ Ibn ʿAsākir (9) has collected a good portion of them; we have confined ourselves to this much. God is the One who grants success to what is right.
