The Oath of Allegiance to al-Malik (1) al-Manṣūr Qalāwūn al-Ṣāliḥī
On Tuesday, the twenty-first of Rajab, the emirs gathered in the Citadel of al-Jabal in Egypt and deposed al-Malik al-ʿĀdil (2) Salamish, son of al-Ẓāhir, removing him from the straw mat where he was being kept (3). They had pledged allegiance to him only in appearance so as to forestall turmoil at the time of al-Malik al-Saʿīd’s removal. The emirs then agreed to bestow the oath upon al-Manṣūr Qalāwūn (4) al-Ṣāliḥī, granting him the title al-Malik al-Manṣūr. News of the allegiance reached Damascus, where the emirs concurred and swore the oath. It is reported that Emir Shams al-Dīn Sunqur al-Ashqar did not swear with the others and was displeased by what had occurred, seemingly out of envy toward al-Manṣūr, for he considered himself the more eminent in the eyes of al-Ẓāhir.
Al-Manṣūr’s name was pronounced from the pulpits in both the Egyptian and Syrian lands (5), coins were struck bearing his inscription, and affairs throughout the provinces proceeded according to his will (6): he dismissed some officials, appointed others, and his decrees were carried to every region. Thus he removed Burhān al-Dīn al-Sanjārī (7) from the vizierate and installed in his place Fakhr al-Dīn ibn Luqmān (8), secretary of state and head of the chancery in Egypt.
On Thursday, the eleventh of Dhu al-Qiʿda of this year, al-Malik al-Saʿīd, son of al-Malik al-Ẓāhir, died in al-Karak; his biography will be mentioned, God Most High willing. In the same year Emir Aydimur, formerly the viceroy of Syria, was carried in a palanquin because of an illness to the Egyptian domains. He arrived toward the end of Dhu al-Qiʿda and was confined in the Citadel of Cairo (9).
