Satan said to him, “O Jesus, do you not claim that you desire none of the trappings of this world? Yet this stone is one of its trappings!”
Jesus, peace be upon him, rose, picked up the stone and hurled it back, saying, “It—and the whole world with it—are yours.”(1)
Maʿtamir ibn Sulaymān related: Jesus once came out to his disciples wearing a woolen cloak, a mantle, and a loin-cloth. He was barefoot, tearful, disheveled, his complexion yellowed by hunger and his lips dried by thirst. He said,
“Peace be upon you, O Children of Israel. By Allah’s leave, I have put the world in its proper place—no wonder in that and no boast. Do you know where my dwelling is?”
They replied, “Where is your dwelling, O Spirit of Allah?”
He said, “My dwelling is the mosques; my fragrance is water; my relish is hunger; my lamp at night is the moon; my winter prayer-times are at the sunrise points; my perfume is the herbage of the earth; my clothing is wool; my emblem is fear of the Lord of Majesty; my companions are the chronically ill(3) and the poor. I awaken owning nothing and retire owning nothing, yet I am of good cheer and untroubled. Who, then, is richer or more profitable than I?” Ibn ʿAsākir narrated this.(5)
Ibn ʿAsākir also records, in the biography of Muḥammad ibn al-Walīd ibn Abān ibn Ḥayyān Abū al-Ḥasan al-ʿUqaylī al-Miṣrī, the chain: Hāniʾ ibn al-Mutawakkil al-Iskandarānī—Ḥaywah ibn Shurayḥ—al-Walīd ibn Abī al-Walīd—Shufay ibn Mātiʿ(6)—Abū Hurayrah—who said that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“Allah, Exalted is He, revealed to Jesus: ‘O Jesus, move from place to place so that you will not be recognized and harmed. By My might and majesty, I shall marry you to a thousand maidens of Paradise and shall bestow favor upon you for four hundred years.’”(7)
This ḥadīth is unusual in being raised to the Prophet; it may in fact be mawqūf, transmitted by Shufay ibn Mātiʿ from Kaʿb al-Aḥbār or another Israelite source. Allah knows best.
ʿAbdullāh ibn al-Mubārak, from Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah, from Khalaf ibn Ḥawshab, reported that Jesus said to the disciples, “Just as kings have left wisdom for you, so leave the world for them.”(8)
Qatādah said: Jesus, peace be upon him, declared, “Ask of me, for I am tender-hearted and I hold myself to be insignificant.”
Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAyyāsh, from ʿAbdullāh ibn Dīnār, from Ibn ʿUmar, said that Jesus told the disciples, “Eat …”
